After finishing this pedal and tuning it up I quickly realized what a gain beast it is.  My 1M gain pot basically was not fine tunable.  Just shy of CCW I had a good amount of gain but then a slight CW rotation it turned into an animal.  I decided to experiment with wiring a different pot on a 3PDT switch.  Eventually I went all the way down to 10K.  This provides a more realistic Hi-Gain/Low-Gain Channel switching.  Even with the pot at 10k there is still a ton of gain.  I may even eventually switch Q1 from a J201 to the MPF.

Main message......although the circuit emulation is geared at extreme hi gain, I give 2 thumbs up on adding a second gain pot.  Downside seems to be a pop when I switch between pots.  I'm sure there's a workaround but don't know what that would be.

Just a little update.  I solved the pop issue that I had when switching pots.  I initially just followed someones suggestion on a post to use a 3PDT.  You actually want a DPDT.  Just wire the ground connection straight to both of the pots.  So lugs 2 and 3 are on the switch.

As for the second pot itself, I actually ended up going with a 5k linear (I needed my 10k log for something else).  But, if you happen to choose to put an MPF102 in Q1 then 5k probably won't work for you.

This is what I did but I put one after the other. So I put a 10 K before the 1M pot and keep the 1M very low and  have the benefit of a usable 10 K pot.

But in my case the reason I did this was because I left out the tonestack and replaced it with a SWTS.
