Big yo la tengo fan. Wish i could do the stuff with loops that he does

I've done the two chip thing.

It doesn't work well. The controller inside the ISD takes too long to load instructions and execute them so after you instruct one ISD by the time it takes to start whatever operation then head over to the other ISD to start it the loops go out of sync pretty quick.

I did offer multiple loops with v1.0 but no one seem to care much about it.

I built my 1.0 with the multiple loop feature (just the 2 loops). It's actually really useful, but I wish I had made it a stomp switch instead of a toggle. It can be useful to record an "A" phrase and a "B" phrase and toggle through them. As I recall it's just an SPST so probably would be simple to turn it into a stomp without too much rewiring.

Yep its just a SPST so you can use a normal footswitch. I thought it was a nice feature myself. Worked well on mine.

Anyways I will get back to v2.0 soon. Its sitting there ready waiting for me. I think I'm being overzealous in my error checking with the protocol I wrote.

How far reverse-compatible wise are you going with V2? Somebody gave me two ISD25120's.

The 1700 uses the SPI protocol while the 2500 is button logic. Different technologies. No reverse compatibility.

Thanks. I'll probably end up building V1.0 then.

Ugh! I want just ONE of the type of chips used to make any version.

I have had to step away from this for a few. There is still one bug that is causing a seemingly random glitch in behaviour that I haven't quite nailed down yet. I know its one of those small stupid things but I have been looking at the code for so long that I started to go blurry eyed. I need to step away from it for a bit and come back with fresh eyes and nail that last problem.

I was also going to add a few things to help the user debug the design if there are problems. I think that would be appreciated with such a complex build for some.

Andrew

That's a shame, but totally understandable. This is one project I'm really looking forward to. Take your time, get it right. Andrew, when it is done, will you (or Aron's store) be offering pre-coded ISD1700's and PCB's?

Yeah sorry about that. It would have been easy to produce a controller for the 25xx series but now that they are EOL there is little point. And there are not many DIP sized ISD series anymore the 1700 being the best ones now IMHO.

Some people have already offered to make PCBs. v2.0 will work with any 1700 so no coding will be needed. I will make sure some has 1700s availible to the community before I release v2.0.

looking forward to this one....

what will the sample rate be?

and how long will recording/playback be..?

has anyone got a demo of the v.1....?

i'd love to build one of these!...cool.

The sampling rate is adjustable on the fly from 6.4kHz to 12kHz which if adjusted during playback will change the pitch of the playback. Length will depend on the size 1700 you buy and the sampling rate you set it at. The larger versions can go 4 minutes and beyond. There are some sounds samples somewhere of v2.0 I made somewhere. Maybe some of the v1 series too.

No worries; I completely understand your viewpoint. I got the chips for free, and v1.0 does multiple loops, so I'm happy. I was really just checking to figure out whether I should wait for v2.0, or just get cracking on v1.0 :)

Hi Andrew, not to be a pest, but I'm curious if you've made any further progress on Payback v2.0? Thanks!

Its still sitting in corner of the workbench. I'll hold my head in shame. I've been busy getting a new product ready for release as well as a few other things for DIYers to enjoy. I'll be getting some free time in the next week or so.

Hi folx. I've been talking to musicians about loopers lately. They all seem to use the Line 6 DL4 on a table or stool so they can use their hands. They would like to be able to raise or lower pitch and/or speed with a knob, slider, etc. so they can record harmonies or just cacophony. I'm serious about the Line 6 DL4. These are people from New York to Portland to Arizona, etc. All different styles of music as well.

Jaicen_solo

Any news on this project Andrew? And please tell me it will fit into a 1590b!

The Tone God

Its sitting in the corner waiting and collecting dust. My fault but biz has been kinda busy and I also released the light plates. Its not abandoned just other things keep getting in the way.

Andrew

Jaicen_solo

Ah, no worries then.
I'm actually working on a stripboard layout to fit v1 into a 1590b. I've got the audio section finished, but I wonder if you could mail me a larger copy of the full schem, because i'm struggling with the digital section. I don't suppose you'll have time to verify my layout either, but i'll post it up here when it's done.

The Tone God

Oh I forgot to answer yes it should fit in a 1590B. Its smaller and simpler then v1.0. The controller is a 14 pin IC and the audio section is only a 8 pin dual opamp. The audio circuit is fairly simple too as I took advantage of some of the 1700s internal features. The digit stuff is easy too. I don't think I can make it an simpler then this design with this ISD IC.

I'll post a larger schematic later today.
