The Tone God

Other then the "4017" in their names  they are not compatible, in fact they are almost completely different functions. One is a flip flop the other is a counter. You want the 4017.

4017 is a decade counter with decoder.

40174 is six flops.

They are NOT directly related. You got the wrong part.

What do you really want? 8 decoded step counter. The flop-pack can count to 8, but decoding to 1-of-8 will need additional gates.

4017 *may* still be sold at Radio Shed. Probably #3 on RS's all time hits of CMOS.
