hi, experimenting with some stuff i have kicking around, and it looks like it would be insanely easy to work up an overdrive of some sort with one of these chips...
but rather than try and roll my own, i'd like to try something that i know will work (i am a total newbe, really)

can anyone suggest a relatively easy project i could attempt to build on some veroboard?

thanks in advance!
peace

Loads of overdrives you can do with this. So, here is a link spam.

And these are just the ones that come to mind. Of course, you can also do single op amp stage designs like the Distortion+, the Rat, the Shakas, etc. I just got the impression from your post that you wanted dual op amp designs.
Out of these the only one I can personally recommend is the Crank. It sounds great, although it doesn't add much distortion of its own.

thanks, cm! i will check these out...righteous!
yes, i did wanna try and find something that would use both halves of the opamp. i was thinking that basically cascading them with some minimal circuitry would be fun, and a good way to start learning. i used to mess alot with tube circuits, and looking at the schem on the back of the package, it kinda reminded me of a dual triode, and seemed it would be a good candidate to mess with.
again, very much appreciated!

Made me think of this:

awesome...thanks guys. minimal part count is what i'm hoping to achieve...i found the ocd one to look fairly easy..and beavis's stuff is always cool.

but i'm looking for the most minimal thing i can build....and all these links are awesome...it's starting to look like i may be able to hack something together after all!
thanks!

They're all similar in complexity unless they're really complex.
Dual opamp distortion uses DC power to increase AC power, expect gain stage or stages, possibly a buffer. Adding opamps of course is like rolling the dice again when snake eyes is loser.
Read debugging: what to do when it doesn't work to get to understand the sticky topic related to TL082 and all active devices and how to get them to...what the schematic shows, pertains to passive devices also.
The data sheet of this device is also an absolute must read, some background reading is recommended for improved comprehension, it is worded to encompass most of what the device can do, showing examples of ways to wire it for common uses.
Wiring anything up and debugging it will show you somthings, reading the data sheet while scrolling...down to see what it said...up to take another look at the example diagram..back down to try to make sense of it..over to google tab to find out what the vernacular means...
Count the number of connections at each node, measure each resistor just prior to installing it, watch your polarized orientations, study the bypass as a separate subject...perhaps start with perfbread [socket in perfboard] or breadboard and testclips and testjig, you'll get something up and running.
Never let it beat you and you can't lose, setting it aside when rest time comes is strongly recommended for improved build-vibe !
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

wow, thanks pete, that's actually not only good advice, but very inspiring!
;)

i don't have a breadboard yet, but i did finally get some veroboard ....way easier than the perfboard crap at rat shack!

i get a feeling, looking at the various schematics suggested it's gonna end up being a wee bit more involved than i'd originally thought...
but shouldn't be insurmountable hopefully!

hope i'm not biting off more than i can chew already  :icon_mrgreen:

i have highhhhhhhhhhhh hopes, anyways...
again, thanks...it's nice to know this forum is friendly to those of us that are newborns, but eager to learn... :icon_biggrin:

Go for the Son of Screamer then! Nice pedal!!! I made a couple and love them! I have made a vero layout for it, in my gallery!!!
Done an' workin'=Too many to mention - Tube addict!

pinkjimiphoton

renegadrian, that looks like just the ticket!!
thanks dude...
you mean this layout, correct?

not to sound like an idiot, but is 47n the same as .047?

is 220n the same as 220 mf?

thanks, this really looks like it's right up the alley of what i want to build...awesome mate!
peace

Heck, there's so many great suggestions here, just build them all and see what you like best.  :icon_mrgreen:

lol...one bite at a time, i'm crazy enough already!!

but i hope to eventually build a couple of ...well, everything!
;)

but first i need some chops..i thought my soldering was good, until i tried bobtavia for the second time and discovered some of my solder joints
weren't so good...so i reheated all with fresh solder repeatedly, took a dremel to the board to make sure the channels between the strips were isolated,
and it STILL was f'd up...finally got it about the 10th try...this is a lot harder than tube amps were!!
;)

but..it works bloody great now, and i am really psyched!!!!
:icon_mrgreen:

but still confused on the nomenclature of the caps...i've seen so many different things, i can't figure it out.
little help would be appreciated!!
;)

thanks guys, the son of screamer looks like the next build i'll attempt...

peace!
