Pedal gain pot behaving strangely . . .

On one of my distortion pedals, the gain pot is doing something weird.  Specifically, from min to max the pot will allow me to go from a mild distortion to a heavy distortion.  But sometimes when I turn the pot to min the sound goes away and then by turning it up I can go from a light OD up to heavy distortion.  (The latter way is how I would expect the pot to behave.)

What might be wrong with the gain pot?

Can I ask what pedal it is?  That might give some clues as to how the gain pot is wired, and possible reasons why it might behave in that manner.
