MXR noise gate smoothing the decay?

Alright any tips on this? I get a really spluttery decay. I'm using the tonepad board. I've tried matching the hfe's and it's not helping, I'm using a 2n5485 and mpsa18's (also tried 2n3904).
I had to reduce the gain around the op amp because it wasn't working stock so the 1M feedback resistor =680k and the 680R is=2k. Also the resistor between gate and attack has been socketed anything below about 400k works the 1M mutes everything. The gate seems to be working fine apart from this decay problem...'

I've done the attack and release mods.

NE5532, could it make a difference? I've sort of fixed it by replacing the 2N5485 with a J201, the attack and release controls don't have as much effect though now (i've increased the attack pot and still the same) but otherwise the decay is a lot smoother.
Thanks

This is another circuit where the properties of that JFET are critical.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar enough with it to tell you what they should be.

It's the JFET, and you tweaking other stuff to make up for it so far.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Thanks RG, after having another play with it i'm pretty happy with it using a j201 the attack mod isn't quite as pronounced but otherwise it works pretty well.
