silly question about mic preamp.

i saw the prices on mic preamps and decided to build one myself
this looks like fun..

but two things are holding me back:

one: its powered by a 15 volt adapter (or two 9v batteries)
would it easily work if I make a voltage doubler.. and does anyone have a good option.. i like to run it on a onespot if possible.. or would a regulated universal adapter on 12 volt do the trick..

two: can I run it through my phantom powered mixer..

It looks like it runs on +/- 15V, so getting +/- 9V with two batteries won't get you quite where you want. You can probably use a MAX-1044 to invert the voltage, and to double it, leaving you with something like +/-17V. As long as the amount of current the circuit needs is less than the amount of current the MAX-1044 can provide, it should work.

Well, if it already has phantom power from the mic pre in your mixer, aren't you... uhh... already using a mic pre? Unless you need gobs of gain, you probably want to plug any preamp you build into a line in, and not a mic in, and phantom power wouldn't be available.

If you did try to go with phantom power, though, the standard apparently calls for 10 mA of available current per microphone. Whether or not that is realistic, I have no idea. You would have to test and see.
