Hi all,

Is this pedal "do-able"? I figure it must be digital to a certain extent (bit reduction, LED display), but has anyone got a glimpse at the guts? Can it be cloned in a cost effective manner, or am I looking at forking out some dough to augment my arsenal of sonic mayhem    .

I tell you Ven, I've been salivating over this sucker for a while, but I decided to plunk down my tax refund on a BOSS GT-PRO instead. Considering the way my rig is set up, the GT-Pro, with it's 3 effects loops, made more sense for right now. It will be replacing my SDD-3300 in the rack. But, the Geiger Counter has me fixated. I thought about getting an Alesis Bitrman, but it's less suited (hardware-wise) to my needs. The GC seems way more flexible and useful. Less of a "one trick pony".

If it's clonable, then great. If not, guess some overtime will be required

This has been discussed before, it's digital so to clone it you'd need the software. The schematic on it's own wouldn't do you any good.

You can do sample rate reduction, bit crushing and a lot of the same sorts of sounds using an analogue to digital converter chip. There's a couple of designs on here using them, do a search for digi fuzz or digital fuzz, that should get you somewhere.

How about the Electrix Filter Factory? http://www.vintagesynth.com/misc/electrixfilter.php . See them often on EBay, and much more reasonably priced than the Line 6.

OK, this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFwI7AniQrI (the first effect), is pure Uglyface. Uglyface ... all the way. Built one, with the LFO, LOVE IT! I noticed that you're asking around for LDR's. If you can get your hands on one, build an Uglyface, and enjoy.

You might want to try the line 6 first.  My old guitar player had one and we were completely underwhelmed with it, I scored the filter pro and it was almost like it was a completely different machine, wish I hadn't gotten rid of it, it was so much more versatile than the floor unit.

I don`t have any clips of my Uglyface yet, and won`t for a while because I`m all packed up and moving right now. But, Jimi (pinkjimiphoton) posted a video in this thread http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=91484.0 of the one he built. You`ll get a good idea of what this sucker can give you. The Uglyface itself acts as a wicked fuzz envelope, which is pick sensitive. Then you can also kick in the LFO, which will sweep the soup like a flanger. You can sine sweep, sweep up, or sweep down. It`s really narly. I built mine on vero using this layout http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=70747.0 . I used a VTL5C3 opto, but any LDR / clear red LED with similar specs will work.

I'm now struggling the same thing. we'll it's a bit harder on my side since she's moving to mississippi from our country for a study and i'll be moving to LA sometime soon. so at the end of summer we're saying bye to each other but we wanna get back to each other. and ahh so nice that you and your girlfriend live together and struggle for greater good! OK. Got the sucker, and opened it up.... DAMN!! There's black goop covering all the IC's.

Wonder if there is some elegant way to get it off, without messing up the pedal. Looks really well built though. Shielded wires, and everything.

its just an ADC>DAC with variable sample rate and bit depth. very easy things to do that dont require a pic microcontroller or some firmware or whatever. its not going to have presets or nice display but you'll have a pot for bit depth and a pot for sample rate. the IC's do all the work. you just gotta buffer them and get the signals at the right levels in and out.
