I think the real moral here is if you get a fishy part send it back! ;)

There was no way for me to know that the part was jank until I had already installed it... Testing it proved useless since it tests out just fine. Once installed I (personally) wouldn't take it for an exchange.

As for putting the long shaft pot in your short shaft body, it's possible.
I've done it before, different situation though.
Are they the same brand and or the parts the same size?
Give it a shot...

I'm gonna try. I have another pot that is roughly the same size. Hopefully i'll be able to get it licked that way instead of having to dig out the cavity a bit to make one of my short shaft pots fit.

I'll tell the owner all about this if I ever see the guy... Unfortunately i've been going through my brother to communicate with this person; thats how little I actually know him. I'll make sure my brother sends the message along that i've sweated for this thing. Maybe if he finds out i've been nailed to the cross trying to do him a favor he'll kick me back a few extra bucks.

So... How to go about swapping that pot shaft... I have the pot case off and I can see the wafer but it looks like the shaft and wiper have been riveted to the wafer from the bottom... How do I get that off without destroying everything?

I've been there many times. Right now I have a Qtron I am modding. Should be easy but..........

Hmmm... I don't recall anything riveted.
Just now opened up an Alpha pot I had lying around and dang, you're right.
The bottom is riveted to a plastic piece holding the wiper and the shaft doesn't come out of the bushing.
IIRC, the one I replaced the shaft just popped out of the bushing so I was able to take the shaft and wiper assembly out of them both and then swap.

*EDIT*
I just found the guts of the old one I had (I have no Idea why I saved it...).
Looks like it was a plastic shaft that had broken off, and I remember now replacing it with guts from another plastic shaft pot of similar make I had around.
The plastic shaft ones slip right through the bushing.

Looks like you're back at square one.
If I had a spare 500k long-shaft I'd send it to you (if you lived in the States, sorry a line's gotta be drawn...) but I'm fresh out.
I stopped ordering long shaft pots when Mouser started carrying short ones.

I'm going to try to cut the riveted end off. If I can get it off i'll be able to remove the shaft and wiper from the wafer. Then i'll try to install it in a new pot using a screw to mushroom the end back out and hold it in. If I dont get it... I'll have to chip out his electronics cavity to make a short shaft fit. I'm not going to eat shit on this one.

Oh gosh... Wish me luck.

I was able to use a chisel to chip out enough wood to make a short shaft fit... Sure wish I had tried that before the parts fiasco. I ended up using a solid shaft, so his knob wont fit anymore but he only had one anyway...

Considering the shape the guitar was in when it arrived I seriously doubt he'll notice its absence. I'm just glad to be rid of it.  :-[

Thursday was actually a really good day for me. I was cleaning up and adding decals to a Dr. Boogie I built for my brother and I got that all squared away. I finally swapped the dpdt in my EA tremolo for a 3pdt and added a mod so that the rate led goes solid when I switch to boost mode and flashes in tremolo mode and I got that wrapped up. I finally got this piece of garbage guitar off my bench and I got the bench cleaned up a bit for my next build: Superfly.

I'm thinkin' Superfly with a Marshall tone stack...?  ;D
