grounding issues....

so i just wrapped up a pedal for my buddy, and tried to play on it.  it doesnt pass any sound, and doesn't work inside the enclosure.  i thought it was a grounding issue, so i took out the jacks and stomps, but when i tried to plug it in when in bypass mode there was tons of noise, and when the effect was engaged it was silent.  it would still not pass the guitar signal, so i am thinking about removing all the knobs (pots) and trying again.

my question is, how do you go about grounding your effect to the enclosure so i don't have to put electrical tape between every pot/switch/jack in the inside of the box.  that solved my first 2 enclosed pedals problems, but now this one is acting up :(

Lots of info about this on the forum.

Usually for grounding to the enclosure, I don't...intentionally, anyway.  Typically the contact your 1/4" jacks make with the enclosure will ground things on their own.

If you're not getting any sound at all, it sounds like something else may be wrong.  Are you 100% sure the bypass path is correct?  Maybe the bypass path is being crossed by something else?

Seven64

yea, cause it works fine when i take it out of the enclosure.

spargo

Can you explain how you have the effect grounded as a whole?  How is the DC jack grounded, the board, the jacks, etc.?

Seven64

everything except the 9v plug is grounded to the sleeve of the input jack (stomp switches, pcb, mono jack)

the 9v plug is grounded to the ring of the input jack.

spargo

I'm not a grounding expert, but try grounding the 9v jack to the same point.

its not a metal dc socket is it?.....

nope, plastic jack

my first pedal didn't work until i put some electrical tape down seperating the pots from the enclosure.

am i doing something wrong?  i ground it this way so that there is not a complete circuit until the input jack is plugged in.

could it have something to do with the quality of jacks i am using?

deadastronaut

out of curiosity what pedal is it?.....you shouldnt have to put tape under your pots etc...they should be fine touching the box.

never heard of this problem!... ???

magnus modulus.

i had the same problem with my little angel tho

deadastronaut

you definately shouldnt have probs with the lil angel....

is your power supply definately tip negative?...does it work ok on commercial pedals?....

is your dc socket wired the right way round?....if all answers are yes, then thats very weird!.

pics might help...

im pretty sure that it is correct, because when outside of the enclosure the pedal works just as its supposed to.  i have had this problem with every pedal i put into an enclosure however  :-\

i don't have a camera, but my gf does so i will get pics up tonight after she gets off work

deadastronaut

hmmmm......yeah pics will be best option..

its working now, its the output jack that is giving me problems.  i am gonna try to switch to enclosed jacks here soon

MoltenVoltage

If you overtighten jacks you can break the plastic insulator and cause a short.

Learned that one the hard way.

interesting.  i think it was the inner part of the jack was bent a little weird.

but hey, i got this....
