I'm placing an order at Tayda and Futurlec today and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for parts to buy, because I'm trying to build up a stock of parts so I don't have to go out and buy every time I want to build something. I'm all set for resistors and electrolytic capacitors. Any suggestions? Thanks!

the value packs are a good place to start. I got their capacitor pack and it has pretty much every common value.
Obviously if you intend to build lots of a certain type of circuit then a bunch of opamps for example could be handy, or some mixed FETs perhaps.

Thanks. That's a good idea, I'll do that.

May I suggest buying gobs of potentiometers while you're ordering from futurlec?  They're the best price around for Alpha's.

Off the top of my head common values:

A100k
B100K
10k
500k
1k

I'm sure others will chime in.  Also: there's a similar thread like this if you do a search ... something about suggested parts for beginners; it is quite comprehensive.

the radio shack 1/4w carbon resistor pack has lasted me until 3 or 4 builds ago, and a built quite a few things with it before i started building pedals.  the only value it doesnt have  that i have needed was a 3.0M resistor for the tillman FET preamp.

also, FWIW these resistors have the largest leads out of any component I have ever used (xicon metal resistors, panasonic ECQ caps etc)

tayda has almost unbeatable prices on ceramic caps.  i like to order my pots from there as well, but their shipping gets a little pricey when ordering pots.

i ordered the futurlec resistor pack, as well as both the mylar film and multilayer ceramic packs from them, and have found them all pretty useful.  futurlec shipping takes a little long for my taste (2-3 weeks) but I am in the US so im not sure how it will differ going to the UK.  same goes with tayda.  i do order my large veroboards from futurlec, and my small ones from tayda.

for IC's, i started using tayda, but switched to smallbear upon testing their NE5532 and PT2399 chips against eachother.  for the little angel chorus, there was little differance except for the "fullness" of the effect, and the speed had more range with the smallbear chip.  in the magnus modulus, there is a large differance with the chorus effect and tremolo strength, both in favor of the smallbear.  the futurlec pt2399 IMO was worse than the other 2 for some reason.  when looking at the chips side by side you can tell that one is a knock off by the quality and precision of the chip markings.

i had great success in ordering a 1000 piece metal film resistor pack on ebay, but upon searching the forum its pretty up in the air about that.  I am going to try the ebay carbon film pack (probably 2000+ pieces), and also a 1/8w resistor pack so i can work on the newer boss pedals.

i have yet to find a good source for 3pdt stomp switches :(

my favorite spot for enclosures is mammoth, because of the price.  i can get a drilled and painted enclosure for about $10 plus shipping.

i am not a knob snob, so i just use the tayda ones for now, except in my newest order from mammoth i decided to dress the enclosure i purchased with some fancier knobs.  probably gonna evolve on that bridge before long due to the aesthetics of the tayda knobs.

i ordered stereo jacks from tayda, and liked them until i started actually putting them in enclosures.  the nuts are all stripped, and almost impossible to tighten.  I am going to make a switch to switchcraft/enclosed jacks from here on out.

as for hookup wire, the 22 tayda wire is pretty good for the price, and the 24 small bear wire is outstanding!  i just need wire strippers that can strip the smallbear wire so i can quit using scissors.

led's are cheap pretty much any where you go, but i did learn the lesson that the "ultra bright" ones are MUCH different than the $1 for 100 packs.  bezels are really cheap at tayda, and work fine for me.

the little angel was a great first vero project, and sounds great with all tayda chips.  sockets are pretty important if you want to experiment with different op amps and sounds.  tayda ones are cheap, and i think futurlec has a pretty nice pack of them.

good luck!
