I use a ~2 year old HP color laser and a hotrodded GBC H220 laminator. The "best" paper so far has been the front side of the backing sheet from a pack of Avery labels. The labels are the clear ones, though I don't think that changes the backing paper. They are more difficult to peel off, though. Getting pretty decent results.

Various photo papers transfer really well, but the paper coating also sticks to the copper. Any ideas on dealing with this? Or, is that the fundamental problem with current photo paper?

I read somewhere that newer toner has finer particles for higher resolution printing and that this is actually less desirable for our use. Don't remember where I saw this, and am not sure that it makes sense.
An oxymoron - clean transistor boost.

Tried different types of laser printer with 20-30 different paper (photo, glossy, magazine, backing paper, toilet).  Everything looked shity. Sometimes lines were too thin, sometimes no lines, sometimes too fat.
Now I use an inkjet with foil. Photopositive pcb and a UV-lamp.
It´s totally simple and everything looks great now. No problems with toner or paper.
For me - laser and paper sucks...

I bought a Samsung ML1915 from Argos about a year ago. It's perfect.

I have 2 brothers. they suck. My samsung is perfect.

.Mike

Samsung all the way.

I had an ML-1750 for years that finally stopped feeding paper from the tray. The envelope feeder still worked, but I sometimes need to print in bulk.

I replaced it with an ML-2525 (currently $50 on Newegg), and love it. The only problem I have with it is that Samsung has chipped the cartridges, and so you have to buy a reset chip when you refill the toner. It's about $75 for a replacement toner, and it's good for 2500 pages, so 3 cents a page.

If you're not doing it for yourself, it's not DIY. ;)

Samsung ML-2510 here.
I make MANY Boards and decals with it.
The one time I bought refill toner it didin't work at all.
Fluke maybe but I bought the Name brand Samsung toner
after that and does the trick. Expensive toner but it works.

I just got one of these a few months ago and it has been great so far. I just went thru my initial toner cartridge and am awaiting delivery of the new one. The cartridge that comes with the unit is good for about 700 copies and the replacements are supposed to be for 1500 or so and are about the same cost of the whole machine, 58 euro for the new cartridge here.

Finding the controls for everything on the control panels can be a bit confusing and sometimes all of your presets have to be set before each copy. It does not have an actual setting for glossy paper but there are about 10 options. I use the cardstock paper option and set the density at dark and the quality at best and turn of the toner save mode for when I print for case etchings or boards. It works good with the thin glossy paper I use and also with the blue toner transfer paper(I don't use the blue plastic PnP though there is a setting for transparencies) for boards.

I bought one after lots of research around the web and it is worth the cost.  I would go ahead and get the replacement cartridge with the initial purchase though as there are places on the net where you can get a package deal at a discount.

Checking to see if anyone has found a good brand of toner.  I have the Samsung ML-2010 which I have used for years without any troubles.  I even have bought a 2nd cartage off Amazon without any issues.  I recently order the same replacement from the same company and it will not transfer.

Has anyone found a unit that works for sure without it costing $50?  I think I am going to try the suggestion of getting a refill, but figured I would ask first.

Yeah my old laser printer was on the fritz so I started with positive photo process with an inkjet and have never done the toner transfer method. Seems to be more info around about the toner transfer method and I felt like it might be easier before I had ever tried. I gotta say the positive photo method is simple and the results are great! The fine definition of lines I can get is great! I cant compare to laser toner , I'm sure you can get great results with toner.

So I just wanna say to those out there that haven't tried it and are wondering what method to go with, give it a try. I use mg chemicals pre-sensitized boards, every board comes with instructions and I use just a regular cfl bulb to develop.

I am too invested in this process to switch.  I bought a bulk amount of pcb material years ago off ebay and got a bulk amount of the pnp blue.  I do like the photo process, which I use for screen printing, but for the pcbs the cost is just too high for me.  Plus most of the boards I do now are double sided.

I have an old HP LaserJet 1200 and it work perfcet! I refilled the toner cartridge one time now, it lasted about 2 years of heavy printing (my wife printing coupons) :icon_rolleyes: The I refilled it and it's working great again... No jams, nothin just good dark prints! I don't know where to get new/refilled toners for it because it's old but I am sure I can find them somewhere. I don't like the magazine paper method although is does work... I use glossy photo paper from Walgreens about 25 sheets for $8. They peel right off perfectly and the toner transfers perfect every time..
Doesn't matter what you did to get it... If it sounds good, then it is good!
