If I want to make my own custom length DC jacks; what kind of cable should I use?
Anything at all at a hardware store that's normally used for house related products usable?

I use bell wire or thin speaker cable, you can probably get that in hardware stores.

Miniature speaker cable like this:

It's thin and flexible, and the one-side-tinned makes for easy polarity ID.
