Studio gear?

Hey everyone. Can you suggest some DIY gear (electronics, not things like microphone pop filters and silent cabinets) which can be especially beneficial in a studio environment? My home 'studio' is mostly computer-based, but I'd like to add some outboard analog gear into the workflow.

A power attenuator for tube amps, the Weak Joe opto compressor, and a Little Angel in ADT mode all come to mind - as well as a digital trigger-to-MIDI converter (e.g. eDrum, although I'm thinking of rolling my own) for electronic drums.

There are numerous attenuator DIY projects. The Air Brake being very popular. There are also a number of DIY-able mic preamp projects out there too.

a big +1 on that.  The Tape Op forums have some good stuff also.

There are some folks that really know their stuff around here that can be a big help too, PRR comes to mind.  I do quite a bit of studio DIY myself, I'll let this one simmer for a bit and get back to you with some recommendations.

One thing that comes to mind immediately is the Bellari MP-105 mod, I have a matched set of Neuman V476b's and still go to my MP-105 for a lot of stuff.  You can still pick one of those up pretty cheap.

http://www.mnats.net/ - Old school Urei compression/limiting amplifier projects with pcb's. Haven't done one, would love to as there's no way I could afford an original Urei LA-series piece. I rented LA-2s and 1176s for a studio project some years back and it was heaven, I ran the whole mix through them. 

For MIDI-to-Trigger conversion, try www.highlyliquid.com - terrific documentation, you get a pcb with the smt part already soldered and then the rest is up to you. Also a neat kit to create your own MIDI controller, which is just a great thing to have for your Ableton LIVE, Logic, Cubase and synthesizers. My MIDI controller I bought 10 years ago just bit the dust and if I can't repair it then I think DIY will be my next step!
