k, dino, it's done...i added two 1 meg pots for the formants, and had fun breaking stuff to get the 10k pot working...including carving splines into the knob shaft of the pot with my dremel so the little gear thing would fit. and then breaking the pot by pushing on it too hard. and then not being able to get it off, because in addition to breaking it, i pushed the thing on before putting the washer and nut on.  :icon_redface:

but, i got it together, and yep, it's definitely gotta be 10k...the 100k was sweeping past the formant range, and into regular "wah" territory. killer wah, but not quite right.
the 10k fixed that. now it makes funny noises like a guy with a tube hanging out of his face.

i have a feeling the coloursound may have the same problem, in that the formant sound was located in the heel, and then swept into a wah too...

beginning to wonder if it was an audio taper pot and not a linear, and also if it's supposed to be a 2.2k stacked pot instead of a 22k one...cuz it acts just like this one did!!
not exact, but close.

anyways, it's working, i need to scrounge up a couple knobs for the formant pots, and it's done. one of the frequencies is a lot ballsier than the other, and they seem to almost sweep against each other. and it seems moody...never exactly sounds the same when ya turn it on, but once you use it it does.

anyways, expect a demo soon my friend...i think you're gonna enjoy this one if you build it, if we used the other half of that chip for an lfo, it'd sound scary close to the ludwig with the animation on, and a decent sounding fuzz feeding it.

Well bro, what can I say, I just call them as I sees them  :icon_mrgreen:. That's why they stay "unverified", until they're built, and played with. The Mouthmeister was listed as 10K, and the Vocalizer as 22K. That doesn't mean, however, that they will necessarily give you the performance one is looking for.

Rather than change the pot, maybe try changing R17 and R20 on the Vocalizer. These are the last two resistors before the pot. Maybe changing these values, will move the range either up, or down in the range of the pot. I would maybe try a couple of 5K pots, set to the resistances spec'd, and wired in here temporarily. Then you could play with the circuit.

After all, that's part of the reason why we're all here bro. Share the knowledge!

I think your Lib Komrade going into the Mouthmeister should rip things up just dandy, if the Vocalizer was any indication!

here ya go, bro. gonna try and switch it around a little bit, i think the other formant is stronger than in the tiny dazzler demo. it may be due to tolerance in the pots.

it's almost like one is out of phase...i wonder if i could reverse it or something? weird, i dunno. but it definitely works, thanks for the layout and putting up with me!

definitely an improvement over the pyle wah that it now posesses.  :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted: lol

Sounds pretty gnarly dude. I like. It's different from the Colorsound, though. It seems a bit thinner tone-wise, but in a good way. It seems to fill the gap between the Colorsound, and a Dunlop. I think that by trying different caps, in place of C10, and C12, will give you different vocal qualities. I guess one could go overboard, and rig 2 multi-pole switches, and switch between different cap values, or voices.

Definately interesting.

And for a Lithuanian... you pronounced my last name pretty damn well  :icon_lol: Love your vids as well. Thanks.

Peace brother!

hah!!
a litvak....i had a feeling...lol.

yah, i realized after i made that video, i had the damn transistor in backwards. believe it or not, it works either way...one way sounds more like a wah (like in the video) and the other sounds more like the original one that top top made. i reversed it later. strange planet. it doesn't REALLY seem to matter.

definitely needs more gain i think...one side is way stronger than the other, like you said, different caps may make a difference. i'll try and get some better clips this weekend for ya.

all in all, a fun toy...definitely thinner than the vocalizer...but i'm wondering if the vocalizer is supposed to use an audio taper pot maybe. seems strange that most of the formant sound on it was in the beginning of the sweep.

i might ask rg to take a look at this circuit, maybe he can make some improvements. i highly reccomend you build this bro, but i'd also reccomend if ya do, putting an lfo in it.

Well, you may have something on the audio taper, but check the Vocalizer thread, I left a post there. I did some research (R.G.'s site as well), and you can use resistors directly on the pot to change the taper.

Research on Colorsound wahs reveals that some models used a linkage, to "cam" the sweep of the pot. Although the original Vocalizer didn't, and the schem says "2 x 22K Lin", Lets not forget that nothing is set in stone here, and THAT'S the way we like it.

Personally, I think that if you go with a resistor, or trimmer, right on the pot, you'll be able to bend the taper closer to your liking. Check this thread; http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=66471.0 , as well as the Vocalizer thread.

P.S. This Greek to the Litvak; My old man worked on the railroad for 33 years. He had a good buddy, a Litvak, that worked with him. I remember the first time I laid eyes on him, he scared the crap out of me. Guy was as big as wall, and lots of gold teeth. Made quite the impression on this 10 year old. He had a farm out in the country, and we used to go out there in the winter sometimes. I remember zipping around the country side on his ski-doo's, tons of great food, big roaring fires in the fireplace, some of the finest hospitality on the planet. This guy had a heat the size of a bus ! He passed away several years ago, my old man took it hard. They seemed to be two peas in a pod, worked thier asses off, good times, bad times, and moments that would drive any super (or union rep!) up the wall.
I believe that there is a certain comaraderie that develops naturally between persecuted peoples. Doesn't matter where they are, or born, or what path they've taken in life, some of it is just genetically embedded. Amen.

Cheers brother!

Let me know if you try the resistor mod on the pots. If it works, I'll add a note to the layout.

okeedokee bro...i will try messing with it this afternoon when i get back...right now i am replacing the pickup toggle in my old firebird, after 41 years it finally broke down. still works, but not well with 3 pups.

i have a feeling you're on to it with the idea of messing with the taper with some trimmers. i bet it's gonna be something weird, but quite do-able!! ;)

i will report my findings as soon as i get some.

any luck with the house hunt? i hate to admit it, but i'm still living outta boxes too in some circumstances, a year after moving in this place.

oh yah...one thing i DID pick up...you gotta try one...is a powegig toy guitar for xbox.

see, it has this hex pickup inside it... ;)

i got one on evilbay for about 14 bux,...i plan on stripping the pickup and electronics out of it to see what  i can come up with, then mounting an old humbucker in the carcass for the most bizzarre lap steel of all time!!

you can actually play this thing, believe it or not...and it sounds pretty good plugged into a normal guitar amp!! ;)
