Is there advantage/disadvantage wiring a pot, variable resistor using all 3 lugs

Opposed to just using 2? I looked but couldn't find and information. Any google search leads to generic information about pots.

If the wiper becomes intermittant the resistance is limited to pot's maximum resistance, instead of becoming infinite.

Can make a great difference between smoking circuit and not smoking circuit if the pot is part of DC servo or bias circuit in a high power circuit, say, a power amp.
