Hi everyone,

I've been modding my DS-1 (using this tutorial http://www.instructables.com/id/Modify-Your-Boss-DS-1), and although the distorted sound seems fine (and all the controls are working as they should), the volume of the distorted sound is much higher than before. Also (this is the main problem) the distorted sound seems to be leaking thru to the bypassed, with the controls affecting the sound still. The bypass LED works as it should.

Also, when I was putting the pedal back together, it sounded like something snapped when I was tightening the nut on the volume pot, but I couldn't see any visible damage...

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Rob

I just finished doing the same mod from Instructables. I  got the same result, re:  the volume of the distorted sound is much higher (I thought this was a normal result of the mod); but I am not getting any sound leaking through to bypass.   The problem I am having is that the new LED connected to the new switch is not coming on.

Did you solder in the 47 pf cap on the clipping diodes on the solder side of the pcb? I am a novice at this but my wild guess is that the sound leak  comes from a solder joint that has been bridged by one of the many new solder joints required for this mod.  Do you have any wild guesses as to why my switch controlled LED is not coming on?  How did you get the new LED to stay in the hole ?

Thanks for the reply!  :)

Looking at the schematic, the clipping diodes are shorted like that anyway (although, I'm sure they didn't look that way on the board, so I may try removing the cap and cleaning up the solder bridge). Your problem (if you are referring the the "all seeing eye") is probably that the LED's polarity is incorrect imho... I fixed my LED to the case with superglue, but a hot glue gun is probably a better idea if you have one...

i did that mod and it sounded great.  the increase in volume in the distortion signal is probably from the removal of the limiting diodes.

Yes, it sounds very nice, its only the bypass which is a bit weird... Did you short the diodes with a solder bridge when you soldered on the cap? I think I might have accidentally broken something in the bypass circuit, I'm tempted to extract the pedal's innards and drop them into a regular project box, pull out all the bypass electronics and put a true bypass in...
