hey guys, I'm trying to find that thread on what component does what in those schematics and can't find it. I dont remember the name of the thread. does anybody have a straight link to it? also what other readings should I do to get my skills up another step?

You might be thinking about Geofex's "Technology of..." series.
There's a gold mine of "what part makes what noise" sort of stuff there.
Maybe:

Not sure if this is what you are asking about, but a wealth of info none the less..

resistors = stripeys
capacitors = roundies , chicklets or lil black battery guys
transistors = triples
diodes = look like stripeys but they are black
pots=volume knobs
red=plus
black=minus

dont mix the last two up .

thats how i teach my kids anyway , they do pretty good teardowns . although my lil one hoarded a bunch of pcb's in her bedroom the first time . that was just adorable .
im learning , we'll thats what i keep telling myself

^ haha that's too basic for me :P. I know how everything works and all but I'm trying to get a better, scientific understanding of the things  :icon_razz:

OK, correct me if I'm wrong:

For the OP, also play around with http://www.falstad.com/circuit/ or LTSpice. You can learn a lot with simulators.

Resistors , wrong . Those are tropical fish caps .
You mixed up xtrs with pots .
Caps ? Those are polypropylene or metal flim types are obviously more expensive .
THAT , diode is a radial cap 22uf 500v numbers are even there , where have you been searching ?!
You messed up + and -

I was joking, those all fit his definitions for the parts, but are completely different parts. And the second picture down shows radial resistors. I've never seen one for real, but google says they exist.
