ive got an old tube tv lying around which i am going to be throwing away, but i want to take the tube out and use it to build a distortion pedal.
has anybody ever tried this before? can the tube from a tv be used for this?
and does anybody know of any schematics for tube distortion? im sure i will find one but its worth asking.

thanks everyone

   yupp...been tried...
What tube type are we talking about is really secondary to:
whatever the tube choice is, the power supply is what's gonna be more demanding [investment, effort etc.].
These are just a couple question/answers that need to be adressed, actually the tip of the iceberg...'a tube' is akin to 'a shoe-or-bootstring'...the shoe [or boot] needs a certain length string, and is much more difficult to construct than taking the string from the packaging...similar to making a tube work entails a huge deal more understanding and effort than simply picking it up.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

I have used a 6AF11 in this http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=91745.0
it worked but not as well as I hoped, I had to use higher voltages to get the sound I wanted, which gave no gain so I ended up just creating an amp from it.

The better question is "Which tubes?"  Notice the plural?  A true old-school valve TV will have multiple tubes, some of which can be very useful, depending on the model.  Try listing all the tube numbers here and you could get more helpful responses.

You probably have a low-wattage audio amp in the TV already for the sound.  Also, you may have a transformer (or transformers) that can be re-used for heaters and B+.

I can just see a pedal named:

TETRODOTOXIN

using a 6CY5 tetrode.  Tetrodotoxin is the toxin in a puffer fish (and a California newt) that was used to turn people into zombies by suppressing neurological function then putting them in a sealed coffin (since they appeared to be dead) and opening the coffin later.  If it was early enough, they were unharmed.  If later, they suffered brain damage consistent with zombies.  It was used as a punishment for getting on the wrong side of Voodoo priests.

The creepy part is escapees have reported that they were being used as slave labor on plantations, being given a daily dose to keep them in the zombified state, like a loony-bin. By some oversight, one of the "escapees" had been missed on one day. They came to enough to not take the "dose" the next day, and said by the third day they came enough to their senses to devise a plan to escape. I think this was from an American tourist who "disappeared" while on vacation, to show up at home something like 3 years later.
