Hi there-
In a wiring layout such as this,
http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/pdf/ggg_eat_lo.pdf?phpMyAdmin=4a28f86a515b7883e7bc35a68d4e7b6d&phpMyAdmin=78482479fd7e7fc3768044a841b3e85a

can i connect speed lug 3 and volume lug 1 to a universal ground without connecting each respective lug to each other as indicated in the diagram?

It's rather an odd question, sorry about that.. but thank you all for your input and help.
Cheers.

yes, as long as those lugs get to ground that's all that matters.

though, I believe it is a better technique to do as in the schematic, especially if the pots are far from the board. You should try to keep the wiring short and clean as possible.

if it is far easier to make the connection from both of those pots to ground, then go for it.

In my builds, looking from the bottom of the enclosure, usually the jacks are on top, the pots in the middle and the circuit nearer the bottom. I try to make a single ground path starting at the jack sleeves, thru the pots and right down to the circuit ground

good luck
