http://www.pisotones.com/BigMuffPi/psst/schm-black.jpeg Somehow I've collected all the parts for Russian black muff, for free, 100% fee. I ll be using Daphon's E20DS box, and it's 2x 100k ohm pots, 4 bc 549 c trans i've had laying around for some while now. Resistors, caps and diodes from an old tv, and i had sockets around as well, but i m missing one 100 k ohm for tone, i have 10k, 20k, 50k and 250k, but no 100k. Which is the most suitable replacement for muffs tone control?

You could go a little higher or lower. Try a 50k or 250k pot. Just make sure it is linear (marked with a B). Audio Taper won't work well for it, as it works as a divider between a high-pass and low-pass filter. If you have a choice between the two, go higher.

50k and 250k would both work. With the 250k the EQ difference will be more pronounced (a larger difference between bass and treble at both extreme settings), the 50k may be more usable in this respect. Try both out and see what you prefer.

Make sure whatever you're using that its a linear potentiometer.

Download Duncan's Tone Stack Calculator to see how a different value will affect the frequency response.

A resistor on the outside lug 'bumps' that side to X setting...ie the side of the pot it's put on will be like the wiper/knob has limited range...won't go all the way to 'normal' CCW setting [or CW if the Stop Resistor was placed there].
A resistor across 1/2 of the pot reduces it's total value and puts a different curve on the resistance curve.
A couple testclip wires with a resistor between them [or another pot if you want to try different Stop and/or Tapering resistor values on or outside the pot] makes it easy to try different R curves on the pot. I'd say stop resistors if starting with a small pot <100k [will limit tonal range but 'does it matter'...I don't use the pot turned all the way to mud or treble side of a BMP tone much anyway]. 50k, being the next smalleest Rvalue available in a pot, might not give as much TC as you like..hard to say.
Starting with a >100k pot, the tapering resistors might help make the R curve and range be 'sweet' more where you want it.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.
