So I just got it all wired up, and when engaged, the effect is EXTREMLY quiet, and heavily distorted/buzzy.

could it be because i got the lm3080n off of ebay?

i just found in another thread that i should have used a ca3080e instead.  i see that smallbear has those, which is awesome and im gonna try that unless somebody has a different suggestion.

There is always a possibility of bum chips, but there is a much higher probability of solder bridge, misoriented semiconductors, misread component values, and cold joints.  Switching from LM to CA will make no difference.

double checked all my solder joints, a few were crappy so they were fixed.  there are only 4 semiconductors and 1 diode on this circuit, so it is pretty easy to tell that they are all facing the correct way.  

it doesnt have nearly as bad of volume loss, but now it has multiple different distortion voices.  should i have jumpered the trigger spots?  i figured they should be connected so it would have a trigger to start gating.


how would i go about checking this IC?

If the voltages are correct at the ICs I'd build the audio probe at:

Take a look at the schematic, find a suitable middle point for the circuit, and apply the probe. If the signal is good do the same stage with the following stages, and if the signal isn't right do the same thing with the prior stages. Divide and conquer until you find the culprit.
