Rookie query regarding limited pot choices to replace resistor,

Hey all

If I can pick between only a 10k pot or a 100k pot to replace a 22k resistor which will be me the better spread of sounds?  It would be a gain knob if that makes any difference.

If possible can you explain why you pick one or the other just so I know for future?

Not really possible to say without knowing the rest of the circuit.

If there are only two choices, try both and pick the one you like best.
