Regular Breadboard Replacement

Do you fellas replace breadboards frequently?  Or, is there a good, long-lasting breadboard out there?

Mine is developing some flaky sockets.  I had the Unidrive breadboarded and it just didn't sound right.  Few days later, messing around I  tap on the breadboard and almost came out of my chair, not expecting a scream from the amp.  So I tap around until the culprit socket is identified.  Move the resistor to the next socket, and she's alive.

I don't..have mine for about five years now and it's in dire need of replacement. flaky sockets... sockets blocked with broken pieces of wire.. etc etc...

I've found it depends on how much boarding I do- those sockets do wear out from constant metal-to-metal friction.  I think I've bought two in the last couple of years, but I own 5 and rotate them, so they don't wear down as quickly.    Shockingly, the ones that seem to have lasted longest for me were bought from Radio Shaft- they were ridiculously overpriced :P, and the sockets are a little snug, but they've held up to a lot of use...YMMV

These high voltage caps (for tube amps) have heavier leads 'over exercise' the sockets.  I'll have to mark the bad sockets with a marker, or only use larger leads there.

Plus, pick up some breadboards when Radical Shellac has a sale or something.

I hear ya, man...I've since learned the errors of my ways.  Those ones from Rat Shack were the first two I ever bought; I've since found them WAY cheaper at other places  ;)

I love breadboards!   Just this week my wife came downstairs while I was tinkering, and said 'wow, you've got a lot of breadboards going on there, huh?!"  I have about 7 on the table right now, one of which just arrived and I'm soon to order more!

And I love my wife (more than breadboards) all the more, because apparently she actually pays attention when I monologue about electronics and recognizes what the heck a breadboard is!

I got some of mine USED in awful shape, and they all still work perfectly - never had a circuit fail due to a breadboard.
Breadboard it!

That's a pretty decent description of the response I get. I just got a new breadboard a couple weeks ago. RS one I had decided to start in with the gremlins. I was SOOO excited. I showed the female half and she asked me what was for dinner.  :icon_rolleyes:
Give a man Fuzz, and he'll jam for a day... teach a man how to make a Fuzz and he'll never jam again!
