@hall:

i had the same (volume difference) problem with the fuzz faeces, with a choice of either 220/330/470/560r to the  10k bias pot.  fully left would be 'trumpet' (loud)....a little right would be squished splutter fuzz.(loud) ...biased would be full fuzz but a (lot quieter)...

however i experimented with moving the 'out'  to lug 2 of the bias pot instead...

so, lug2 to 10nf/100nf cap- volume pot...IIRC...seemed to 'equal' the massive volume change anyway...try it on breadboard.

I've tried putting a cap in parallel with the bias pot and it gives me a bit more output, but I'm guessing that the increase is proportional to the resistance of the bias pot. -The equivalent of removing a 10k resistor from the signal path.

Is this essentially what you're recommending?

thehallofshields

So I've tried a few different caps in parallel with the bias pot, and anything above 0.01uf starts adding what sounds like farty oscillation and take away from the distortion (no idea why), but values between 0.001 and 0.01 drastically sharpen the treble and helps steady the gate.

Also, adding a 1k trim-pot between Q1's Emitter and Ground has really helped me find a more comfortable sweep along the bias-control.

I'm still not getting those overtones I hear in demo's of mis-biased Germaniums, but things are going better.

Silicon fuzz factories are actually really acceptable and didn't sound to me that far from the germ, add a 10uf input cap for better toanz

I've re-read a lot of Fuzz Face info as I was almost convinced I was missing out...

But what I'm seeing is that you are looking for the qualities of the FF that are at both extremes of mis-bias simulataneously I think.

I'm not suggesting you are on the wrong path - the misbias is a start, check around the 'net for a leakage sim, it seems to be critical for some of those sounds from the germ circuits to have certain leakage parameters met.

Would a Silly Face be better - are we just trying to push a "stock" two trannie FF too far?

thehallofshields

Yeah I would be willing to say that I'm asking for a little too much here, except that I feel that I'm about 80% of the way there, and I know the sound is achievable in very similar circuits. I'll start searching for leakage sim then report back.

thehallofshields

Alright, so I threw a couple PNP Germanium Transistors (2n2034) into my bread-boarded Colorsound Fuzz and reversed the polarity. Already, it gets the lo-fi overtones from mis-biasing that I've been searching for. Very small volume-drop in comparison too.

These silicon fuzz builds sound amazing, I'm very frustrated that I can't figure out how to get silicon transistors to gate nicely, and I haven't been successful at finding information on leakage circuits through google. Any help?

try timmers on both Q's? collectors  50k /  20k....it will still have the extereme vol differences though.

ive messed around with quite a few fuzzes where i wanted that off-biased sound too recently....
but never really got what i was after with sustain, gating, synthy etc..
after a while of being too lazy to put 4 transistors on a breadboard i decided i'd bite the bullet and try a basic big muff setup on my bread board .
and swap the collector resistors for massively different ones..or could be trims/pots ..blah blah...its pretty cool, and a much better sustain/gate......but still experimenting.........
