I know Im late to the party but i made it with J201, 2SK117 and with bypass caps i have basicaly doom machine, without it its like slightly cranked Marshall, any ideas how to tame it?
I'm assuming you have 100k drain resistors?

Have you measured the drain voltages?

The best way to tame it would be to increase the source resistor values.    Use the same resistor values on both stages.   However you need to be careful not to go too far and screw up the drain voltage.   As a start you might aim for a drain voltage of around 4V to 6V.

I should be a little clearer hear:
- If the drain voltages are off you can use the drain resistors to adjust the bias with the source caps
- However if after that gain is still too much try pulling the source caps.
- If pulling the source caps loses too much gain then you can put a resistor in series with the source cap
  to tune the gain

If you can find a Sadaowsky Bass preamp layout or schematic you will see they scaled down all the resistances by a factor of 10.  So 10k drain resistors, and the whole tone stage scales the resistors down and caps up.     I mention this as it's a similar circuit which is known to work.  FWIW, the Sadowsky uses the resistor in series with the source cap.

For the J201's try a SOURCE resistor of 15k with no bypass cap.

According to the water analogy of electricity, transistor leakage is caused by holes.
