Origin of your pedal "brand"

I'm new to the whole pedal-building scene and I noticed that most people incorporate a 'brandname' in their designs, so I'm curious where all those names come from!

I'm not immediately planning on selling my first pedals so I don't need a brandname, but since my last name is 'Boost', I feel like I'm obligated.  :icon_biggrin:

Not made any pedals for sale yet, and few for my self too, but my brand (for my own as well as any I sell) will be Rumbust.

Rumbust is from Rumbustious, meaning noisy or loud, but even more so from one of Terry Pratchetts books about Tiffany Aching and the Wee Free Men, I think it's in the second one ("A hat full of sky") where one of the older witches says she's told the people living around her they'd live longer if they'd eat less "rumbustious food" as the life of a person depends on how often they farts (less gas passed -> longer life). She only did it to see how funny everyone looked while they tried to stop farting for a few days and then revealed that she'd only been kidding. Well, I'm quite rumbustious my self and liked both the story and the word, so I made a verb out of it and registered the domain(s, I've got .com, .org and .se). Rumbust.com has a pedal related wiki, everybody is welcome to contribute, the other ones are pretty dormant.

Sorry if I'll derail this thread (momentarily) after only two replies.

Seeing this topic again, I grabbed my copy of "The Wee Free Men" and flipped through it and found my bookmark for that book. I often use a small piece of paper as a bookmark, something thats around when I start reading the book, often the reciept for the book that I've placed in the book when I bought it or, quite often, a ticket as I mostly read when travelling (I commute). This time I'd stuck a London bus ticket in there as a bookmark.

Looking closely on this you'll see the date (almost faded), the first of july 2005. Six days later, when my girlfriend and I sit comfortably in Uppsala, Sweden, lesser beings set off four bombs in London, three in the subway, one on a bus. I was a long way away, but worried about my brother and his girlfriend who was there, took a while to find out but they were safe.

Thankfully, regardless of terrorists, we continue to be Free Men (and women), wee or not.

Feel free to get back on topic now.

Distorque.

I just spent a bit of time looking up Latin translations of guitar terms and picked the coolest sounding one.

I had some working crks in the bin and I wanted to box them, they were mostly 3 knobs fxs ......with a mod for each!!

rebote, add resonance pot
Crunch Box, add presence pot
BSIAB add controur pot
Hot Silicon, add a switch this time

so at the end I've decided fot this logo, not that I'm selling them ... some to friends that's all

Ciao

I would have gone with Hammer-tone or Tone-Hammer, but both seem to have been taken.  Since I cleave toward the pragmatic, I figure if I ever made a go of it (and unlikelihood, but nevertheless...) I'd go with "Sensible Sound" or maybe "Pragmatix", though one is too close to Visual Sound, and the other too close to Pigtronix.

The concept stems from distorting the guitar and using it in new ways such that it blurs the border between a melodic and percussive instrument, which is already happening in metal anyway. It's sort of a tongue-in-cheek reference to all the brands that focus on "musicality", "clarity", "pure" sounds etc. that sets a strong contrast to traditional values.

The main visual asset is the "crooked eighth note" symbol, which hints to a lightning bolt. Visual identity is still in the works as I haven't had the opportunity to design anything consistent (in terms of product design/graphics and advertising) but the theme of not taking myself too seriously remains prevalent: http://xonedesign.ro/ip/2010/03/pimpin-promo-shots/ .

By the way, I'm not selling anything nor planning to in the near future. Just making toys for myself and helping out the local bands from time to time.

I'll correct my self, I have .net, .com and .se, and rumbust.net has a stompbox wiki. Sometimes the brain takes a holiday.

I always thought it would be cool to call my pedals "Limited Promise".  That way people won't expect too much.  I am thinking about an actual brand name because I'm looking to make more professional looking enclosures (instead of reusing old enclosures with 100 holes from other projects!).  That is actually quite hard.  Especially if I'm able to sell some of them.  Then that becomes my brand and I don't want to be embarrassed by it later.

If I ever need one in a pinch (well only 1 time so far) I use "Mountain Audio Research" because I don't want to be limited to pedals.  I play around with amp and mixer designs when I get bored with pedals.

iccaros

not a brand just how I mark the things I build.
It starts with a name, Iccaros is a phonetic spelling of Icarus, used in a Airborne operations mission I was while being a paratrooper in the US Army. I chose that name because my parachute collapsed breaking my leg in 7 places. If you know the story of Icarus in Greek Mythology you would see how that fits together http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icarus.  Icarus had wings of Wax that melted when he flew too close to the sun, I had wings of silk that collapsed when I had too many twist in my main risers.

So I have used this name since, well the start of the common internet. It was my name on BBS systems before internet access was available.
When I started building tube projects I wanted to label my stuff with something. In the Icarus myth, Daedalus, Icarus's father, is the inventor. So I came up with Daedalus Tube works.

The wyvern or winged dragons, well that goes back to the 18th Airborne Corpse being called the Dragon Brigade.

Turtle Tone Effects.
My last name is Turley, I've been called "Turtles" or "Turtle-y" by substitute teachers and random people forever.

Earthscum

I was looking for some kind of "artist" logo to use online instead of my h4ck name and came up with "Earthscum" in 2000. Over the next 3 years I ended up finding an old sketch of a tribal, rotated it a bit and it looked like an "E", so I stuck with it. I figure, since my last name is Edgar, it works out that way, too. I've been signing my artwork since then with my "earthscum" logo.

Can't remember why I made that one... ^^
