Madbean Green Ringer? Null Carrier Mod?

Hey all, new poster here.

I'm looking to build my first pedal and the Green Ringer seems simple enough. However, what I want to do is be able to have some sort of "intensity" or "depth" control knob on it. Has anyone built the Madbean schem for the Green Ringer (he calls it the Sqweeker)? It appears he's added a spot for the null carrier mod in between D3 and C2...could anyone tell me if this video is an example of the Null Carrier mod?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BFCzVsWwdE

Also, this will be my first pedal build.

Thanks!

A blend pot between clean and wet signal might achieve what you are looking to do. Perhaps not though. You may need to mess with input and output volume controls to get an intensity control thing going on. I can help you out with it if that is what you're looking to do. The null carrier pot will just change the sound of it tone-wise a bit. Judging from that video, it appears that is what that knob is doing. Either that, or it is a volume control (which I recommend on this effect regardless).

The Green "Ringer" is not a ring modulator. It's a simple octave up. As such, there is no carrier to be nulled. The trimmer for "null" is there to enable you to get the two halves of the full wave rectifier action to match (for most effect) or creatively mismatch, which dials in the most effect.

I haven't checked the video, but mismatching the two halves of the signal as with that trimmer will dial in more or less of the effect.

As a bit of unasked-for advice, it is a bad idea in general to be planning mods to circuits if you haven't built any before. I heavily suggest getting something running right before delving into modifications.

I also suggest you read "Debugging thread: what to do when it doesn't work" before you start building; perhaps even reading through the "Beginner's Project" thread a lot before jumping into the water.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Thanks for the responses guys!

Yeah I'm aiming to achieve the exact same thing that the pedal in that video is doing with the knob. A volume control is definitely a good idea though, is that just adding a booster circuit with a potentiometer to control volume level?

I appreciate all the advice! Yeah I don't want to get too in over my head here, and wont be soldering anything until I can prove it works on my breadboard. I chose the Madbean pcb layout since it already has the spot for the null pot in the circuit, which would seem to be less likely to mess up than if I added the mod to the GGG pcb. Definitely will be checking out as much info and tutorial threads as possible, thanks!  :)

Ok so i've looked into it a little bit and apparently I just need to wire a volume pot like this into the circuit: lug 3 to circuit board out, lug 2 to output jack, lug 1 to ground. Is this correct? Also, what value of resistance should I use for the pot?

Thanks!

No extra stuff needed for a volume control. The Green Ringer already has enough output juice (at least in my experience). Just run the effect output to the center lug of a 100k log taper pot, the left lug (with the pot shaft facing you) to the ground, and the right to the stomp switch. If you find it doesn't have enough gain, you can probably adjust a resistor value to up it a little more before it reaches the control pot.

And RG knows best, you'll probably get what you're looking for with that null pot. I didn't even look at the schematic for it.  :icon_eek:

Guess you never got it hooked up?  ;)
