hi guys,

i got a couple old early 60's walkee talkees at a yard sale in hopes of finding some ge goodness inside.

i figured for 5 bucks, can't go wrong.

when all was said and done, i ended up with 16 ge transistors total...8 of which are under 100hfe...one is 20, which i've never seen before.

any mojo in these puppys?

I've never used them in any pedals, but I'm sure I've seen at least a few of these in various 60's Italian and Japanese combo organs I've worked on, most likely part a flip-flop circuit dividing the frequency of a square wave. 2SB267 seems especially familiar. Where were the walkee talkees made?

i've always had pleasant results with the 2sb trannies. dunno if they are the same manufacturer but the ones i've played with were sort of hifi, not too dull, and very quiet.


looks like great gain ranges!


just chuck them in any boost or fuzz and have a listen.

I've used most of those (most from pulls) and the bottom line is as long as the gains & leakages are cool for what you're building, you're good.

most of the Japanese ones I've used have very reasonable leakages, so you'll probably have a good time with those.

the hardest part can be pulling them if they're in tight quarters, but you're past that stage.

they were out of "airline" walkee talkee's...so i think that was montgomery ward.

there's also a couple of 4 legged transitors and a pair where two legs were connected, apparently being used as diodes.

look forward to playing with 'em, if they sound good, i'll letcha know...

..haha...those are the royal pains to remove...but, in the end, the same as a 3 lugged ones.  I just use a Peak or a DMM to find the 3 "normal" lugs and bend the extra one off (bend it back and forth so it breaks flush at the case...if you use wire cutters, you'll probably leave a stub)

it's a second "base" if memory serves.

interestingly tho, these two trannys had a shielded heat sink to ground mounted on them!

and the cool thing is, i also scored two antennaes for my upcoming theremin project, too.

You're thinking of the unijunction transistor. It had two bases, but no collector, so still just three legs. I think there are some four leg MOSFETs though.
