Hello everyone,

I am trying to find the value of two resistors but they have a 5 ring color on them.  They are originally from Germany but noticed that resistors in the USA normally have only 4 color rings.   Can someone please tell me what the value of these resistors are?

First one:  Brown/Grey/Black/Brown/Brown.  The manufacturer listed this as 1K8.  Is this an 18 ohm resistor?

Second one:  Orange/Orange/Black/Orange/Brown.  The manufacturer listed this as 330k.  Is this a 33 ohm resistor?

I tried to find these resistors at my local Radio Shack, but they only come in 4 ring color and don't match with what I have.  Can someone suggest what are the correct part numbers for these resistors?  Can you please tell me the color ring equivalent then?

Thanks.

The values you posted as stated by the manufacturer seem right. Why not just measure them with a multimeter?

There are 3,4 and 5 ring resistors.  The most common is a 4 ring which is what you have always seen.  However, some manufactures print an extra ring on their resistors.  As far as I can tell this ring is for the temp. coeff.  Here's the chart for reading the 3 types of resistors.

Not so fast!  There are some resistors with better than 5% tolerance that use a three-digit number plus multiplier plus tolerance band as shown on the bottom resistor here:

You're right. I got ahead of myself...  :icon_redface:

I think I had a bit of a brain fart right there. lol Thanks for jumping in...

The only reason I caught that is I have an entire reel of red-orange-red-red-brown resistors (23.2K 1%) that I am using as much as possible for gain setting etc.  I got it at a yard sale for $2.  I expect the reel to last my lifetime.
