I am attempting to make this.  I'm planning on using it with bass guitar.

I am using 5089's for the MPSA18 and 2n3906 for the 2n907a and 1uf for in/out caps.

I keep getting this sound.  Mind you, I get this often with circuits and I'm starting to wonder what's really going on.

This is on a breadboard, no soldering yet.

Here's a clip.  Listen to how the note blooms and then kind of decays, then it sounds like the transistor is turning back on, then decay...

Maybe you can help.
Thanks!

That sounds pretty much like what it's supposed to, don't think there's anything wrong. That weird squelchy thing that you're getting on the attack of the notes is normal, if you turn your bass down or turn down the intensity it should get less weird and sound vaguely Big Muffish.

Is it an active bass by any chance? I ran into this when repairing/modding a friends bass. Active basses produce a really big signal that some pedals can't handle well.

It's a passive bass.
I don't think it's supposed to sound like that.  I'm not concerned with the attack, it's a second or so later when the volume dips and spikes and back and forth.

I'll go measure some voltages.

Battery- 8.4
Q1
E  0
B  .59
C  2.35

Q2
E  0
B  .58
C  2.79

Q3
E  0
B  .60
C  1.06

Obviously something is going on with Q3, don't know what the first two should be.

My problem is usually that I can find the offending transistor, it's what to do once I've found it that I don't get at all.

I've gone through changing resistors and nothing seems to help.  I'm grasping at straws when I change things out, I even got out some different pots and swept through with no real results.

Doesn't that clip sound funny to anyone else?

Seriously mate, that's what it's supposed to sound like, mine does the exact same thing. It's a horrible fcuked up fuzzy mess of a pedal.

StereoKills

The attack is what sounds off and I think that's just due to having a big bad bass as an input. The sustained part sounds just like the SM demos I've heard on youtube.

It sounds good to me. It should be 'fizzy' like soda and bloom like the sound of carbonation being filtered by the bottle or can you're swigging from.
