I'm newish to the forum and wondering if anyone could help me.

I used to make PCB's using Press n Peel paper, just now I've started making more complex designs I don't see it as being a viable option. I've just bought a UV box and hoping to be using that. I bought some Jetstar Premium transparancy paper but my printer (Epson SX600FW) won't print on it, just runs it straight though and says to load the paper. I also bought the Jetstar Laser paper, took it to my local Staples store for them to photocopy the circuit image onto, but it's not black enough and the UV light goes through it.

I've been looking at laser printers and seen the Samsung ML-1860 which is also on offer at PC world at the moment and was wondering if it would be a good option to print good quality PCB's. I don't want to spend a fortune on a printer as my Epson works great for what i need it for and just want another (cheap) printer that is capable of printing PCB designs onto. Here is the link to it http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/samsung-ml-1860-monochrome-laser-printer-10849562-pdt.html

Any help would be great!

Make sure you're using the "HQ" setting. Mine goes to 1200ppt, but it sill was a bit grainy. So...
I printed on normal transparent paper but printed two or three and stacked them together (with tape of course!). Made it a lot thicker!

Your printer may also have a photo-detector emitter/receiver pair that needs to be blocked to detect the paper. This is different from a lever type sensor, where the media physically lifts an arm to block a photo-interrupter. As a transparency is transparent (no kidding, Captain Obvious!), the sensor may not be seeing it. Older transparencies used to have a white strip on them so the sensor could see the lead edge for image registration. Try taping a white sheet of paper to the non-image side of the transparency and see if it prints.

Thanks for the replys!

I was going to order that printer last night, but it's been taken off of their website, so I'm assuming it was an end of line sale. I've also just phoned Epson up, my printer isn't designed to work with film sheets, hence the reason why they just run straight through the printer. Before I ordered the laser printer film I tried to selotape a plain piece of paper onto the film but they just kept jamming. I'm still looking at getting a cheap laser printer as I have the Jetstar Laser Film for PCB artwork. Would one with a 1200 x 1200 print quality be more then enough?

I've seen that you don't actually need transparent sheets to do the UV transfers!

Yeah I haven't tried it, (I use transparencies), but this guy gives a good run down on his experiments with different paper/oils/exposure times.  He even tries tracing paper.
Might be an interesting read.

Thanks for all the replies.

I managed to pick up a Samsung CLP-325 colour laser printer very cheaply as it was the last one in stock at the shop. Prints on the transparancy sheets perfectly, and had some very good results using it with the UV box  ;D

I looked at the links above but seemed too much effort for the results really.
