Tayda 1n914s?

I love tayda. But every fuzz I put one of their 1n914s in has a weird effect when if you strum too hard, your signal cuts out for the blink of an eye.

In a band setting, this isn't much of a problem, but has anybody else experienced this?

CynicalMan

Sounds like a bias problem. What pedals are you putting the 1n914s in?

I've done a Tall Font Big Muff and a Buzz Box with them.

I got some very strange looking 1n914s from Tayda. Blue and salmon coloured. I think they just sent me some other kind of diode. I didn't even bother complaining since they already give you discounts for more than the mistake is worth on other stuff. They once missed a 3PDT and a few caps, and when I sent them an email they offered me 10$ credit, while the parts were probably worth 6$ at most. I did get some crappy 1n914s from Futurlec a while back. They work, but they look really cheap. Anyway, it's worth sending Tayda an email if you've got an issue. It might take them a few days to get back to you, but at the very least they'll refund you or send you some replacements.

Yeah they're salmon with a silver and yellow stripe. The 1n34a's they sent are the same thing.  :icon_eek:

Though now they stock actual 1n34a's. I'll contact them.

measure the forward voltage. 914's and 4148's should measure between 0.5-0.7V, while a shottkey will measure lower. The 1n34's I got from them a couple weeks ago are stubby salmon with a pink stripe. I have 1N60P shottky diodes from them that I have to read because they look just like the 914/4148's, red with a black stripe.

I'm finding that I use tayda less because of these reasons.  You really can't rely on getting quality parts or the right ones.  They do still have some great stuff, I just don't buy any diodes, transistors, or IC's from them anymore.

The 1N34As they sent me are marked properly but measure like a silicon. The 1N60Ps are good, though ... better than NOS germanium 1N60Ps, more consistent and they sound really close. Tayda's BAT41s are also right and their 1N914s have been fine in my experience.

I also got some of the red and blue ones from them. It's just a different package -- have you seen how many different packages and markings there are and were for 1N34As? Dozens.

I'll measure when it's not morning.

And that's really weird about their diodes. See, their resistors and caps have always been great for me, with tight tolerances, though they did send me the wrong value/kind of cap once. They sent me the right one shortly after.

Ahh okay, must be a bias problem, these measure around 0.5-0.6. Thanks for all the help.

FYI the 1N60P from Tayda is a Schottky NOT a Germanium. Just a heads up... IMO they sound fantastic and I use them all the time. If I make something that I'm posting here I will build using common recti schottky. Use 2 or 3x 1N60P each way in a Big Muff for some real Nice zip with your fuzz.
