After trying the best this forum has to offer in distortion/overdrives, I don't know why the interweb isn't full of people using the Obsidian and Vulcans.  I guess it is because they are different.  Still, easy to build and sound GREAT.   :icon_cool:

Agreed!
Doesn't matter what you did to get it... If it sounds good, then it is good!

Some nice Vulcan clips here:

Vulcan and Obsidian are now on my breadboard list...

The Blackfire preamp is good too. A classic!

Another thumb up for the Blackfire.  Ended up not being my speed, after living with it for a while, but does a very good job at what it does.

I built an Amber Drive a long time ago which used a TS271 opamp. It sounded pretty good. I should resurrect that one.

i built the transistor obsidian with 2n5089's really great sounding circuit! its high gain man. in the same veign soundwise as the dr. boogie, or bsiabii.
a true gain monstah!!!

Me neither, and I don't have it anymore. A lot of this stuff is made for serious shredding. And if you've ever heard Joe's demos, you know he is very capable. So I think a lot of his pedals are designed with that speed in mind.

The highway 89 is at the top of my to do list, seems to be a nice one too. Thanks Doug and Joe.

also theres that diode trick to keep the transistor/jfet/mosfet from hard clipping...
something i thought others would pick up and incorporate more into their designs...

I did it with opamps, signal to diode ¡<¡ to (+) input. A 390k from the cathode to gnd and a 470k from Vcc to the (+) input.  8)
Works fine.

Do you have a schematic? I never heard of that one

I have it somewhere. It's printed out in one of my binders of schematics for sure, but I don't know where I have it in electronic format. I believe I built that one in 2003.

WGTP

I have redrawn some schematics, like the HWY 89 using Vulcan stages.  Also some amp sims.   :icon_twisted:

I'll try to round up a schematic for the Amber Boost. It's a single opamp circuit that uses a CMOS opamp and MOSFETs as "clipping diodes". I looked for my circuit board last night and I don't know where it ended up. Guess I'll have to build one again so I can see if I like it or not as my tastes have changed over the years.

This is where I first heard about the Amber Boost circuit: http://archive.ampage.org/threads/2/fxsb/064112/Re_Amber_Boost_Schematic-1.html
The link to the schematic is dead now. I must have built this one in 2001 or 2002.

John Lyons

I have the Amber Boost schematic.
If anyone wants it just email me...

I'd really like to have it. E-Mail: [my username]@gmx.net
Thanx in advance!

But why not post it here? It would be a shame if Joe's older circuits would get lost over the years!

John Lyons

But why not post it here?
It's not my schematic to post...
I'll email it to you roseblood.

There used to be a link from this site to an area for Joe's circuits. I don't know if it is still on here somewhere or not.

I looked, it's not there.
