ok i went back a step and added clpping diodes 1n4148's,/ 1n914's which has brought the loudness under control nicely

and added to the brassy sound too....

sorted!!!!!...

I'm currently making a modded fuzz face. Its still on a breadboard. Here is the schematics and a sound clip. What do you think? I don't know how a original fuzz face sounds like, but I like this.

if it cleans up when ya roll your guitar down, it's a fuzzface.

big, woofy, hint of octave down, nice woman tone and some serious breakup!

the thing with fuzzfaces is that they cover A LOT of area. this is absolutely in the ballpark.

well, of course it's a lot bassier with that large input cap, output cap, 100 pf on Q1 and 1K instead of 470...and there's more breakup as Jimi said...but sounds cool! maybe good for a bass or playing Kyuss

i'd like to hear how it reacts with the guitar volume rolled way back.
sometimes, a smaller input cap rolls off too much bass, and ya get more of a treble booster at low guitar volumes.
i used a 10u cap on the fuzz i built for dick wagner..the tone stayed about the same from off to full, but it was too woofy for him.

At the second part of the clip I rolled guitar volume a little bit off.

I noticed that changing the 100K resistor to 68K made it a little brighter. Hmm. Need to test more.

I will record a new clip when I've built this.

i could hear it roll back a little, i'd like to hear some slow volume sweeps, or ya play with the guitar knob barely on.

With very small guitar volume it sounds clean. I don't hear any treble, middle or bass boost

ok i'm back on this to finish it off....finally..

i settled for Q1 2N3904 Q2 BC108.

i tried out the recommended Q1 70-85 hfe, Q2 120-140 hfe for silicons, (which i read somewhere) ....but it sounded really weak and naff!.... (bearing in mind i'm not really a fuzz fan anyway, so it may have been great to others ears!.

)

but i have full on fuzz and the synthy hillagey trumpety thing back too..

..and it cleans up nicely on the guitar volly..

i also added a pregain, instead of the fuzz pot...much better control imo.

and added a 100pf across Q1 collector/ base to quell any high freq stuff going on..sorted.

i shall add a protection diode too..1n4001.

a couple of questions though before i finish my pcb layout.

: why do i never see a pulldown resistor on a FF? (anti switch pop)

: why do i never see 'power filter' cap on a FF? ( 100uf to ground) (i will be using a psu so should i add this?)

: how much beer should i drink to make it sound good?..

ok, finally settled on my values after trying it out with a crybaby , and into my amp..

however, i'm getting a faint but audible (annoying) high pitched whine when fuzz is on...(on breadboard at the mo)

ive tried 47-100pf on collector/base of Q1...but its still there...

it only goes when i turn down pregain...or dial the bias fully CW.. ..hmmmm...

will sheilding the input, and boxing it up get rid of that....it doesn't seem to go when i put my hand over the breadboard...(like it does with hi gain fet stuff)

hmmmm...any ideas?.
