I've never made use of a booster pedal but most of them look pretty easy....so what are your three fave and why?

I like blondes, because all the adverts make them sound like a great time.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

1. microdrive
2. microdrive
3. microdrive

Although I've never made any other boosts I like the microdrive because its a nice clean boost. And with mine I use a spst switch to turn the clipping diodes on and off.

I'm sorry sir, we only have the regular ohms.

I've only completed one booster i like...but i've owned a Keeley katana and i've played alot on an MXR Micro amp. My favorite has been my "Super Hard On" - ZVex i think is the brand. I cloned it. Really simple circuit, quite dirty when it needs to be, but that's only if you're REALLY driving your amp. The circuit acts more like a Buffer + some mmmphhh than anything else.
I came, i saw, i taught little kids guitar for extorted prices.

Jazznoise

Super Hard On

Very tempted by a Mu Amp Mini Booster though!
Expressway To Yr Null

Pyr0

Xotic EP Boost sounds even better with 18v supply.

1. muffer, yep - because its got a little optional squish/grit tubeyness depending on how you bias it collector r/ emitter r...
2. srpp, same reason really depending how you like it it can add some compression without 'distortion' per say, just a bit of assymettry...
3. mosfet booster or mxr micro amp... for cleeen boost... never built either but i believe they are both 'pure' clean boosters without any particular flavor of their own...
nothing says forever like a solid block of liquid nails!!!

You need to think about what you want when you ask a question like this if you want a good answer

What input loading do you want?  Interaction with the guitar/ bass and input cable
What high pass -3dB frequency at the input do you want?
What output resistance etc do you want?
Do you want clean?
Do you want distortion and how much?
when you clip how do you want the output to clip?

Everything else is noise

I like R.G.s post

I asked which your favorites are so really all of those things are up to you....I guess I could have said which are your faves and why?
I just wanted to see what was popular with people around here. As far as what I choose to build its all up to what parts I can find around here.

The French connection

OK! I'll play the game:

1- Gus NPN boost (beginner project) the Mr. that ask you good question before...it was my first build and my fav booster of all. I've lost my ''stompginity'' with this one. :P
2- AMZ mosfet booster (Jack Orman) another Mr. to treat with respect
3- Craig anderton frequency boost...a Mr also.

Bonsoir.
Dan
I know, but the pedal i built does not boost...it just increases volume!

SHO and AMZ MOSFET Booster, don't have a third... or maybe add in  the boost i get when using the EA Tremolo.

1. LPB-1 -- Dead simple, you can't go wrong here.
2. MXR Microamp -- Transparent and strong drive into a tube amp.
3. Minibooster -- For when you want some dirt with your boost.

nascarbean_97

SHO - Easy and Awesome.
LPB-1 - Easy and clean.

AudioEcstasy

don't really have 3 but the Keeley Katana and New Spark boost from TC Electronic are both really great

brett

Hi
I choose to play the game, despite there being no prize.

Stratoblaster.
Why? Right amount of boost. High input impedance (but not noise-seeking multi-megohms of impedance)
At high boost there's a tiny amount of sweet distortion (if you've got good ears). It's like wearing a cashmere jumper (from a blonde goat, obviously  :icon_wink:)

What else?
Whatever you want. Go make/play/invent some. It only takes a battery, a JFET (try J201) and a handful of other parts.
cheers

HOTTUBES

SHO for me ...

i make a few changes to the clone circuit to suit my fancy , but overall a nice booster imo .

sgmezei

SHO
Jack Ormans
Fuzz Face with volume maxed and smallest amount of gain possible to produce boost in volume

slacker

In no particular order

Colorsound Overdriver
Tube Screamer
Gus's NPN boost or Overdrive

Yeah I know that's four, but who cares.

bluebunny

I've only built three boosters (so far), so my list is easy:

3. LPB-1 - nice straightforward boost
2. Brian May treble boost (from RG's website) - loud!
1. Rick's Superheated SHO, aka Red Dwarf - it's completely insane, particularly the "superheated" setting

Ohm's Law - much like Coles Law, but with less cabbage...
