Yo bro, great shootout.

I would like to see a comparison between your 828 Superfuzz, and another Superfuzz with the new set of trannies I've sent you. Since I took the time to measure them, and balance the octave section, it would be interesting to hear the difference, if any.

well, i'll only have the one , other than the fuzz wah...

but i'll take out the ones i have now, and stick in the new ones and video that. ;)

the orange one IS the 828's, but i tried to put an asymetric GE clipper in it...that was in the video.
didn't like it, so i tried a pair of 1n34's.
nope...too fuzzy, not a GOOD fuzzy.
threw in some 1n914's, sounded great, much better. still not RIGHT, but close...sounds a lot like
the orange and blue ones with the huge foot pads.

also discovered that mike's vero doesn't match the schematics. it's close, and it works, but it seems to work better with
about a 3.3k resistor between the ground lug of the tone control and ground...that way it doesn't turn all the way off, and acts (imho) how it probably was intended to
work in the first place. i remember some of them, the tone knob didn't turn it off.
makes it much more useful, if you or anybody else wants to ever try it out.

love the shin-ei tho...really the sound of doom. ;)

Maybe try one of each. A 4001 with a 1N34? Maybe try to find a middle ground between the two.

Poison Ivy, gutar player for the Cramps, once said in a Guitar Player interview that she loved the Superfuzz because it sounded like doom.  Certainly a big part of that is the distortion, but  a huge chunk of it is the even huge-er midscoop.

Kinda makes you wonder what a Big Muff would be like if, instead of its nasal-to-woofy tone control, it had a 2-position tone switch like the Superfuzz, with a wide midscoop that gave a big bottom and sizzling top, plus a volume-balance no-scoop setting.

Curious?

1N4001 was more of a "give it a try" than a recommendation. BTW, they all sound really good but the shin-ei is my favorite.

i like the 914's,  and i'm fairly lazy.

the orange one sounds a bit better after the change.

i tried assymetric clipping, albeit with a 34 and two others in series reverse paralleled...that's what is in the video.

but i agree, the shin ei, even with the proper transistors, sounds better. the orange one sounds like my old orange superfuzz pretty much now.

what may work is ge and si in series...ya get some of the blatt from the ge, but the silicon diodes really tighten it up.

thanks for watching bros!
