A fellow at one of the local guitar shops gave me an old MXR Phase 100 to see if I can repair it for him. The circuit board looks OK, but the enclosure has a a hole that has been drilled and is now too large for the speed knob.

I've read through some of the threads discussing enclosure repair, but I have a couple of questions. Will either JB Weld or Bondo be OK to fill in a hole this large? Once the hole is refilled, I still want to re-drill it for the speed knob. Which of those two is better for that application.

Here's a photo of the enclosure (let's see if this works....)

try washers for both to keep it even height wise........the knobs should cover them...

I agree with the washers idea. Thy are cheap at any hardware store. I have used them a few times when I have gone too far with a step bit or had to enlarge a hole do to bad spacing and alignment.

Head to the hardware store and find a rubber O-ring that fits around the pot shaft, that should fill the gap. I've done it several times and it works great.

Toss that tin, re-package the Phase in an ammo-box, geiger counter, or candy-can, paisley/flame it, and sell it as a Wild Hand-Built Custom Fazer instead of a tired old MXR.

:icon_lol: Just add some LEDs and toggle switches for even more tweaky-moddy-ness.

I mentioned to the guy rehousing it as a possibility. While it looks like it may be an early block logo version, he doesn't care about "vintagy-ness" or keeping it stock. He likes how they sound and wants to use it. If I can use the original case it will keep costs down on the repair.

On the other hand, the guitar shop where he works does do very good painting and refinishing, so I'll have to ask him if he's interested in painting a box himself.

Of course, I have to replace most of the wiring, so I don't yet know if the circuit needs any repairs. Apart from corrosion on the trim pot, the board and controls all look OK.
