Hello all,

I am new to this site and new to building effects pedals.  I bought a synthrotek fuzz face clone (germanium transistors) as a first pedal build and thought that it would be wonderfully simple to complete, due to the fact that there are only a few components.  I got the circuit board populated and the bypass works perfectly.  But alas, when I turn the effect on, and the fuzz pot is maxed, there is a HUGE volume drop.  When the fuzz pot is down all the way, there is an enormous amount of gain and volume, but the signal drops off quickly, and it also oscillates at the low setting.  Another interesting quirk is that the 9v battery gets pretty toasty when the effect is on.  I will try to post some pics later on tonight, but all of the solder joints look to be good.  Any information would be a great help.  Thank you.

What does synthrotek say is wrong with your build?

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

umm...if the fuzz pot is working like that,  it's wired backwards.

the battery getting hot is a sure sign of a short in the power supply (or elsewhere) in the circuit.
