Whilst thinking about building an A/B box, I thought to myself, surely if a stereo cable has a left and right then this signal could be split. What I'm proposing is simple

Stereo input goes into a switch. The Left channel would connect to one switch state, the right channel connects to the other state. Pressing the switch will change from one to the other.

I'm sure this probably wouldn't work, but it seems like it should. Can someone point out the flaw(s) in my idea, or has it ever been tried before?

Mod edit: Please use more descriptive subject titles. ;)

Except for the fact you will be left with left or right signal it would work. The only thing else I can think of that could go wrong might be the common wire causing ground loops if you got it going to separate grounds.

I would bridge the grounds together.

Thinking about it, it seems like it would be more useful for putting two instruments into my board, which would be handy for having my electric and acoustic connected.

I was thinking that because I have mono patch cables, the left and right/stereo aspect wouldn't matter, as it's only a mono signal going through my pedal board (press the switch would change to the other instrument).  For example, if my electric was connected to the left channel (grounded) that signal would pass into my pedalboard. Pressing the switch would change to the right channel (grounded) which has the acoustic connected.

I'm not sure if I've explained it properly, but hopefully whoever reads this will understand and be able to clarify it this will or will not work as I intend. When I get a chance, I'll draw a quick diagram and post it, hopefully then it will make more sense. Thanks

What you need to do that is just a A/B box.

Just have two mono jacks in a box hook them up to a DT#P switch then have the other end of the switch connect to a monojack and bobs your uncle you got your self a A/B switch and you can switch between your two guitars.

P.S. if this isn't clear have a look over at Generalguitargadgets or tonepad they have some schematics of A/B boxes.
