Loading songs into unrealBook

Load your PDF music files into unrealBook by plugging your iPad into the USB port of your computer. Launch iTunes and select the iPad by clicking on it under DEVICES in the left side of the iTunes window.

Click on the Apps tab to the right of the DEVICES list in the main window pane.

Scroll down until you see File Sharing.

Locate unrealBook in the File Sharing area and click on the icon. Under unrealBook Documents there is a drop area that you can copy your PDF files to. Either drag and drop files into the area or use the Add... button.

unrealBook reads most non-password protected PDF.

Using unrealBook is easy! Press the Songs button, press All Files, select a song and turn pages by tapping on the left or right of the iPad screen. Zoom by pinching in the center of the screen. Tap in the center of the screen to display and hide the toolbars.

Songs Button:

Press the Songs button on the top left of the screen. Choose All Files… Tap on a file to display it in the main window. To turn pages, tap on the right to go to the next page and tap on the left to go to the previous page. The page number and the total number of pages is displayed in the top right corner.

songpopup.pngYou can also search for a song in the list. Simply drag the song list downwards and a search field will be displayed. Simply type into the search field and matching song files will appear.

songfind.png

Tapping on the index to the right of the list will bring items that start with the same letter to the top of the list.

Hiding and showing the Toolbars:

Tap in the center of the screen to hide and show the toolbars.

Reset Zoom:

A double Tap in the middle of the page will reset the zoom to a default.

Navigating through a long document (Go button):

If you have a document that has lots of pages, you can use the Go button to help you navigate through your document. Tap on the Go button and a popup will appear. You can type in the page number directly or use the slider to scroll through pages.

The M+ button will set the M button's memory. It will remember the current page number. Use this for large pdf books that have an index. Go to the index page, then press the M+ button. After that, a press on the M button will take you back to the remembered page (which is currently set to the index page).

The Set Page 1 button is also used for pdf files that have an offset in the page number. What you do is go to the first page of the pdf that shows “page 1 visually” and then press the Set Page 1 button. Now, when you type a page number directly in the Page: field, unrealBook will automatically apply the offset taking you to the correct page. Note that this only works for positive page offsets. Pdf files that have negative page offsets, will not work correctly. The -10, -5, -1,+1,+5,+10 buttons will jump pages by those values.

There will be times when you have a large document but you want to refer to songs in that document as individual songs. Bookmarks allow you to do this. Simply go to the page in the document that you want to treat as a file and press the Do button and choose Bookmark This Page. Name your new Bookmark and it will appear in the list like any other file. Choose it and your document will be loaded with the page showing. You can use Bookmarks in set lists like any other file. Bookmarks are simply pointers to a PDF, they tell unrealBook to load the actual PDF that the Bookmark refers to.

(Note: Export Pages can substitute for the bookmark feature as well and may work better).

Add Hot Spot:

A Hot Spot allows you to highlight an area of your music and jump to another page in the document. You would use this for a D.S. Sign or for a To Coda. Press the Do button and choose Add Hot Spot. An alert will appear telling you to tap on a spot in the document to place the Hot Spot. After choosing OK, tap on the page where you want the Hot Spot to appear. Once the Hot Spot appears on the music, tap it again to assign a page number to jump to when you tap on the button again. Note that Hot Spots can only be assigned in the default zoom.

Once a Hot Spot has been assigned, tap on it to jump to the specified page.

You can change the page number or delete the button any time by pressing and holding the button for longer than 2 seconds. A popup will appear allowing you to change the page number or to delete the button. Buttons are saved per document.

The Files command brings up a window that allows you to manage files. Select a file in the list and press delete to remove a file. Since set lists can refer to files, all set lists that reference the deleted file will be changed. The deleted file entry will be removed from the set list. If a set list contains a single reference to the deleted file, the set list will be deleted. You can also rename files by selecting the file and choosing the Rename button. Delete Bad Files will attempt to remove all bad bookmarks that reference non-existing files and will remove bad entries in set lists as well. All bookmarks/set lists should be in sync with the current pdf files that you have on your iPad.

Open In… will present a window where you can choose to send the current pdf to another application.

UnrealBook Help will show this help file.Creating Lists:

Lists are a way of displaying a subset of all the charts you have. For example if you are playing with a Jazz band, you might want to only see charts that pertain to that Jazz band. Lists are similar to set lists, except they are in the Songs menu. In addition, they are sorted and indexed automatically. When you search through a list, only the songs in the list are searched.

There are several ways to create a list. One way is to press the Songs button and then choose Add List… A list editor will appear similar to a set list editor. Press the -> buttons to add to the list. When you are finished, press the Save button and give the list a name.

15__#$!@%!#__image.jpg

Another way to create a list is to turn a set list into a regular list. When a set list is loaded, press the + button on the set list toolbar and choose Add Set List To Songs Menu. This will create a regular list in the Songs menu from the current set list. This is a quick way to take existing set lists and turn them into regular lists.

Finally, you can use DropBox.com to organize a directory that contains folders arranged exactly as you want them to appear in unrealBook. Name the folders exactly as you want them to appear and put pdf files in the folders. Then choose Action->Get Files and use the Change Folder button to locate the folder on DropBox.com. Once the folder is selected, press the Action button in Get Files and select Build Lists From DropBox Folder. Your lists will automatically be created. Any existing lists with the same names are overwritten. Note that nested folders are not allowed and files are not copied from the folders. This is just a quick and easy way to create lists.

In this example, 6 lists will be created based on what is in this DropBox folder. Note that any lists that already exist with the same names will be overwritten.

dropboxlists.jpg

The PDF files within the folders are not copied. This is just another way to create lists via DropBox.

Creating Indexes

16__#$!@%!#__image.jpg

Indexes allow you to create a file containing a list of titles and pages for a specific document. Think of it as a table of contents that you can create for a large PDF book. At this time unrealBook doesn’t have an interface for creating this, but you can use a spreadsheet application to create this file. To create an index, type in the name of the song, the document name and the page number in a spreadsheet. It should look like this:

spreadsheetentry.png

Repeat this for every song in the PDF.

Once you are finished, export your spreadsheet as a .csv file. This file should be comma delimited and should not have a text delimiter (no quotes).

Export as csv:

17__#$!@%!#__image.jpg

18__#$!@%!#__image.jpg

The data in the file should look like this:

name of song, myPDF.pdf, pageNumber

name of song2,myPDF.pdf,pageNumber

NOTE: the PDF name must include the .pdf extension.

The name of the .csv file will appear in the indexes entry in the Songs menu. Since the name of the document is also included in an entry, this means that you could make an index that had every listing of all the books you own.

19__#$!@%!#__image.jpg

All Indexes  will read in and present all of the index entries as one long list. The list is generated on the fly, so if you have lots of indexes, it might take a little while to load.Settings Button:

Pressing the settings button will show the popup for settings.

settingsmenu152.png

File Settings brings up a window that will show settings specific to the current file.

If you want to attach music in your iPad to the current music chart, press the Music button, select songs to play and then press Done. The music will start playing. Once the music starts playing, press the Settings button and then press the Set link button. The current playing song list will be attached to the current music chart. Note that this is the same as choosing the link icon in the Player Controls window. Unlink Music will remove any links to songs. Remove all support files will delete any drawings, annotations, etc, leaving you with just the pdf file. If there is a matching MIDI file to the PDF, the name will be shown in the window.

filesettings152.png

Global Settings, brings up a window that shows settings that affect the way unrealBook works.

22__#$!@%!#__image.jpg

Output VGA sideways will send the video signal to a monitor sideways. If the monitor is widescreen, the music will show as filling the entire screen as opposed to a smaller rectangle centered in the middle. Turn the monitor on its side to display a full screen image. Note: you must have the iPad dock connector to VGA cable to use this feature.

Individual File Zoom will make unrealBook remember the current zoom for every file. This is useful if you have a lot of files that have different image sizes.

Reset search every time will make the Song list always display the search field cleared at the top of the list.

and make search active will always bring up the song list with the search field selected and the iPad keyboard ready to type a search.

Hide Menu Bar will hide the iPad menu bar and give you back a little more room for your music. (Note: you must quit and restart unrealBook when changing this setting).

Turn off zooming will turn off zooming and scrolling of the music. (This has been largely superseded by 2 Fingers For Pan). I recommend using 2 Fingers For Pan instead.

Draw Faster is an experimental test - it may draw some files faster but may have some problems with certain files. Consider this a work in progress.

Animate Page Turns will provide animation when a page is turned.

2 Fingers For Pan - very useful. If turned on, unrealBook will not pan/scroll a document unless you use two fingers. This eliminates any problems where you try and turn a page, but the page moves (pans or scrolls) instead.

Ignore Accidental Page Turns - another useful feature. Sometimes for unknown reasons you might tap twice and accidentally turn through 2 pages on stage. This will ignore double-taps on page turns if they occur within a second. This feature is on by default.

Shake to turn is a novelty feature. If you turn the slider to the left, any left to right shake of the iPad will result in a page turn.

unrealBook Website will launch Safari and take you to the unrealBook online web site.

Network Settings

network152.png

The Network settings window allows you to connect two or more iPads together. (If you wish to connect 3 or more iPads together, see using Server Mode) When using Connect to iPad, one will be the “master” and the other the “slave”. The “master” will send commands to the “slave” - such as page turns. When connecting two iPads, please make sure that one of them has Slave Mode turned on.  Connect to iPad allows you to share files and link 2 iPads together without having to have any type of Wifi connection. Use this when you need to give a chart to another member in the band and Wifi or email is not avaiable.

Connect to Ipad - Press this button to display the connect dialog which allows you to connect to another iPad. Use this when you want to transfer a file via Bluetooth.

Only Send Files - Set to on, if all you want to transfer between 2 iPads are files. No page turning.

Send Next Page - Set this on if you want the other iPad to display the next displayed page instead of mirroring what the master iPad is displaying. If you have 2 iPads for yourself, then use this to display 2 pages at once!

Slave Mode - Set this on for the connected iPad so it is in “listening” mode. It will receive commands from the “master”.

Keyboard Connected - Set this on if you are using an Airturn Bluetooth foot pedal or a generic Bluetooth keyboard.

Using Server Mode: Server mode is great for connecting multiple iPads together. Simply set one iPad as the server by setting Server Mode to ON. On all of the other iPads, use Connect to iPad and connect to the iPad with -SERVER appended to the name in the connect dialog. If you are connecting via Bluetooth, use Nearby. To connect to a server via Wifi, use Online. Multiple iPads can be connected via Wifi if they are all on a local network. Once the iPads are all connected, they will respond to song load commands and page turns. If you do not want your iPad to respond to page turn commands, set Ignore Page Turns to ON.

How To Examples:

Transfer a file from one iPad to another using Bluetooth.

For both iPads:, tap the settings icon and select Network settings.

For the iPad that wants to send a file, Set Only Send Files to ON. Load the file you wish to send to the other iPad using the Songs button.

For both iPads, tap the  Connect button and press Nearby. Wait until the other iPad appears in the connect window.

For the sending iPad, select the receiving iPad in the connect window.

The receiving iPad will have an accept button displayed. Choose it.

From the sending iPad choose Send File Via Bluetooth from the Action menu.

Press Disconnect to end the connection on both iPads.

Make one iPad the master and another a slave. The slave will mirror the master iPad.

For both iPads, tap the settings icon and select Network settings. Tap the  Connect button and press Nearby. Wait until the other iPad appears in the connect window.

For the master iPad, select the receiving iPad in the connect window.

The slave iPad will have an accept button displayed. Choose it.

Set Slave to ON on the receiving iPad.

Close the settings window for both iPads. The master iPad will control the slave.

Note: In order for mirroring to work, both iPads must have the same files that you wish to use.

2 pages with 2 iPads

Follow the above instructions to set mirroring on, then choose Send Next Page on the master iPad in the Bluetooth Settings window. Now the second iPad will show the next page of the document. (For example the master iPad will show page 1, the slave will show page 2). Note, this only works in Portrait mode.

One iPad to many iPads

For both iPads, tap the settings icon and select Network settings. Set the master iPad to Server mode ON. For the slaved iPads, select Connect and then Nearby if using Bluetooth or Online if connecting via local network with Wifi. For the slaved iPads, connect to the iPad name with -SERVER as the suffix. Close the Network settings windows on the iPads. Now any file loading and page turns on the server/master iPad will be sent to the slaved iPads. If you wish to ignore page turns on a slaved iPad, set Ignore Page Turns to ON on the slaved iPad in Network Settings.Using a Bluetooth keyboard or Bluetooth foot switch to turn pages

Pair a Bluetooth keyboard or Bluetooth pedal to the iPad using the Settings app in the iPad. Pressing any letter will open the Songs window with Find enabled. Pressing up arrow will go to previous page, down arrow will show the next page. The Bluetooth foot pedal needs to send up arrow and down arrow keystrokes to work with unrealBook. In order to turn pages, the main toolbar needs to be hidden. Tap in the center of the screen to hide the toolbar and receive Bluetooth page turn commands. A green dot will appear on the top left confirming that unrealBook is ready to receive Bluetooth commands.

Creating lists of songs quickly

You can use a set list as a generic list of songs but creating a set list and pressing the Sort button. In addition to this, if you have a set list active, pressing the “+” button on the set list tool bar will add the current song to the active set list.

Avoiding moving a page vs. turning.

Turn on 2 Fingers for Pan in Global Settings. This will require that 2 fingers be touching the iPad before it will scroll and move.

MIDI

Type 0 (single track) MIDI files can be used to send setup info to a device. Create a type zero (single track) MIDI file containing program changes and controller info. Then name the MIDI file with the exact same name (case sensitive!) except for the .mid extension. An example would be:

ThisIsTheNameOfASong.pdf

ThisIsTheNameOfASong.mid

The MIDI file data will be automatically sent when the .pdf file is loaded.

NOTE: you must have the iPad camera connection kit and a USB interface that doesn’t require drivers for OS X in order to use MIDI files.

Problems and solutions:

Problem:

You want to be able to remember the songs that you played in a large pdf book and want to quickly access those songs again.

Solution - use Bookmarks.

Select Add Bookmark from the Do Menu. Name the bookmark. Now the bookmark will appear in the main song list like any other file. Choose it to load the book and go directly to the song.

Solution2 - use Export Pages.

Tap the Action Menu and choose Export Pages. The advantage of export pages over a bookmark is that Export Pages creates a new file that may load faster.

Problem:

You need to quick way to recall songs that you need on the gig tonight.

Solution - Use the set list feature in the Do Menu.

Create set lists using the set list feature and use the set list song popup to quickly access any song in the set list on the fly.

Problem:

You need to quick jump to another page due to a d.s. or to coda mark.

Solution - Use the Hot Spot feature in the Do Menu.

Create Hot Spots and assign the page to jump to.

Problem:

You have a large "real book" type PDF with hundreds of pages. People are calling out songs on the fly. You need a way to get to the index page fast and a way to jump to the correct page number. The problem is that the page numbers don't match what the PDF is telling you. Page 1 visually is really page 6 due to the cover page and notes.

Solution - Use the Go Menu buttons.

Turn to the index page and hit the M+ button in the Go menu. Now any press on the M button will take you quickly to the index page. Now go to the first page that shows Page Number 1 visually (which could be page 6 etc....), now press the Set Page 1 button, now when you type any value into the Page: [] field, the correct page will be brought up. (Note: this will not work for PDFs with negative page offsets)

Solution2 - Create an index for the PDF. Although this requires work ahead of time, you can create a searchable index for any large PDF in unrealBook.

Problem:

You need to put a note to remind yourself to press program 8 on your keyboard during a section.

Solution - Use the Add Text button in the Do Menu.

Select the Add Text button in the Do Menu and then press any where in the score. Now type in "program 8" and hit return. The note is placed on the score and automatically highlighted.

Problem:

You need to skim through a book quickly.

Solution:

Use the Go Menu -10, -5, -1, +1, +5 and +10 buttons to jump through the document quickly along with the Go Menu slider.

Problem:

You need a chart sent to you quickly.

Solution:

Have someone email you, use Dropbox.com or give you a URL where the PDF is located on a server. In Apple Mail, press on the PDF and choose Open with unrealBook. For Dropbox.com, press the document tray icon and login and get your file. For a URL, press the document tray icon and type in the URL and press the download button.

Problem:

You need to send someone a PDF or an annotated version of the current PDF.

Solution - use the Action menu.

Press on the Action menu and choose from the various email choices. WARNING: do not choose Email ALL Screen Shots with a huge file because there is a limit to the maximum size and attachments that most email systems can handle. Use this for a maximum of 10 pages.

Problem:

You need to delete a bookmark.

Solution - use the Do Menu->Files command.

Choose the Files command in the Do Menu and select, then delete your bookmark.

Problem:

You need to draw on your chart to remind you of a few things.

Solution - Use the Do Menu Draw command to draw on the chart. Use the Pen button to choose different pens/colors. Use the slider to set the size. Use the Clear button to clear the current page.

Problem:

You need to draw directions to the gig and email it to a band member.

Solution - Load up a blank page PDF, then start drawing using the draw tool. Then choose email screen shot to send them the picture you just created.

Problem:

You need to reposition a Hot Spot or text annotation.

Solution - use the Do Menu Edit Object command.

Choose Edit Object from the Do Menu and drag a Hot Spot or text annotation around. After you reposition it, a window will come up where you can further edit the parameters for the object.

Problem:

Two or more people are on stage and you wish you can could share your iPad display with someone else. You do have a computer monitor that you can use. Maybe you have a huge display and would like to project the music from your iPad to the display.

Solution - use the iPad VGA connector to connect the iPad to the monitor. Set Settings->Output VGA sideways to on and then turn the monitor sideways to see a big screen image of your music!

Problem:

You want to delete a song or bookmark from the list.

Solution - use the Files window to select and delete (or rename) a song or bookmark.

Problem:

You have a huge PDF and want to export a song so you can access it even easier than a bookmark. You want to split the file up.

Solution - use the Export Pages command to export the pages to your iPad using (Export as pdf command).

Problem:

You want to “erase” bad chords and wipe out sections of your chart.

Solution - use the white pen do “erase” sections or chords in your chart. Then use a pen to draw over the area.

Problem:

You have some files that are too small, some are too big etc... You want to set the display for each file individually.

Solution - Set Settings->Individual File Zoom to on. Then go back and set your zoom and position your music the way you want per file.

Problem:

You want to link a single song or songs to a chart so that every time you bring up the chart, the music is ready to play.

Solution -Load a chart, then go to the music button, choose a song and press the DONE button. Now either tap on the music controller button and tap on the link icon or go to the Settings window and tap on the Set Link button. A play and pause button will appear in the toolbar indicating that a song is linked to the current chart.

Problem:

You want to skip between songs in a song list that you linked to a chart.

Solution - use the new previous and next buttons on the music controller.

Problem:

You wish the songs menu would always show the find field. You wish the songs menu would always default to a search and have the keyboard active and ready to type.

Optimizing files for unrealBook.

When using the Print to PDF option on the Macintosh with Sibelius, you may find that the music displays less than optimal. To fix this, use a program called optimize PDF (found on the unrealBook website) or drag the PDF into TextEdit and search for APPL, then change the false to true.

Open file in TextEdit. Find AAPL

Locate the false next to AAPL.

Set to true:

Then save the file.

A word about the support files that unrealBook creates:

unrealBook will create support files as you use it. Here is a short explanation of what the files do.

.bkm are Bookmark files that unrealBook creates . They point to a document and the page within. They have the same name as the associated file. Note: in order for Bookmark files to work properly the document they point to must be in the unrealBook folder.

.stl are Setlist files. They are simply a list of songs in order. Note: in order for Setlist files to work properly the document they point to must be in the unrealBook folder.

.prs are Hot Spot files. They contain your Hot Spots for your document. They have the same name as the associated file. Note: in order for Setlist files to work properly the document they point to must be in the unrealBook folder.

All of these files can be viewed in TextEdit.

Important Note:

If you want to delete or rename files, please use unrealBook's File window to do this. The reason is that set lists reference songs and bookmarks, bookmarks reference songs. If you delete or rename songs or bookmarks, other files that reference the changed file need to be modified.
