help with gains for Q1 - Q4 in fOXX Tone Machine

Hi! I'm building fOXX Tone Machine and just bought 50 pieces of 2N3904 (got them for 4 bucks).
Does anyone have any suggestions where to put them?
Phillip Bryant says that he used Q's with gains of 110-120. Is it 110 on Q1 and 120 on Q4, or?
I got, in my 50, many different gains but no idea where to put them in the chain.
Don't have, and will not use sockets for the transistors. Don't like very aggressive fuzz tone.
