Backup! Various methods

Please do backups regularly. Here are various ways to backup from easiest to hardest.

First, make sure you have an iCloud backup. If you have to pay 99 cents/month to upgrade iCloud, please do it.

Then proceed with a manual backup. There are several ways to do this.

If you have a relatively recent iPad (gen 6 and later with sufficient space) , it is possible to Airdrop all of your files to a computer. Go to Settings->Utilities and choose Airdrop Documents to Computer. This will use Airdrop to send the entire Documents folder to a computer. This will be a complete backup of unrealBook files.

Use Airdrop Documents to Computer to make a complete backup of your files if you have an iPad Pro

You can use Catalina/Monterey/Ventura and later MacOS to create a backup. SEE THIS PAGE.

You can use iExplorer. I tried this in demo mode and was able to download all of the contents of unrealBook. The app is reasonably priced at $40.

Check out iExplorer.

Another way is to use iFunBox. (iFunbox is not signed. So use at your own risk. To open, right-click on app and choose Open). It may display an error, but you can still double-click on the unrealBook folder in App File Sharing and access your files. I just tested this with Sonoma 12/27/23. It does copy.

Here is how to backup and copy to another iPad with iFunBox.

Here is how to backup and copy to another iPad with iMazing which is an amazing paid program. (Note: iMazing has a new licensing which charges per device). I don’t like this licensing but the program still works great.

(old and outdated) Before Catalina, the fastest and most reliable way is to use iTunes.https://diystompboxes.com/unrealbook/manual/how-to-make-a-manual-backup-of-unrealbook-files-with-itunes-12/
This method will backup only the unrealBook music files and works well.

The following methods require you to restore the entire iPad if you need to recover the backup:

iCloud backup is another method but it requires you to recover the entire iPad.

4.0-4.1.1 turn off Apple Pencil Drawing on non-Pro iPads

Unfortunately, unrealBook has a bug where non-pro iPads do not draw correctly if Apple Pencil is enabled. This will be fixed on 4.1.2. So for now, please do the following. Turn off Apple Pencil drawing and clear the drawings for the file that didn’t draw properly.

Turn off Apple Pencil Drawing – Settings->Global->Functions

Turn off Apple Pencil Drawing.

Then clear the drawings from the files that didn’t draw properly. Settings->File

Clear Drawings

This will fix the problems until version 4.1.2 is released.

How to set a preset volume for an mp3 file in the unrealBook documents folder.

This assumes that you have already copied an mp3 file into your unrealBook documents folder via AirDrop, Email, iTunes or Dropbox/Box.

If you don’t know how to import a file, see importing files.

Go to the CD/Music menu and choose Music Controller.

Open the music controller and press Link Audio File

Press Link Audio File (in Blue).

Choose the song you want to link.

Choose the mp3 (or mp4) song you want to link to the page. You can use the search field to find the file. Press the title to select the song.

Next, go into the CD/Music menu again and choose Player Volume.

Set the slider to the volume you want for this song and then press Set Volume For Page.

Now when you choose this file and turn to the page and press play, the file will play at the predefined volume. Once a volume level has been saved, the window will display the volume level saved with the page.

If you have iTunes library songs, you will need to enable system volume.

Go to settings->global->Playback and enable System volume slider control.

You will be prompted to quit unrealBook. Double-press Home button or swipe up from the bottom to see the multi-tasking card view. Swipe up on unrealBook. Then run unrealBook again.

Now you can set volumes per page for iTunes library linked songs.

Portrait Mode vs Landscape Mode on iPad

Ever since the iPhone starting taking “Portrait mode” pictures, there has been confusion regarding the iPad usage modes. The iPad has two ways of holding and using it. Portrait mode and landscape. Also referred as vertical and horizontal mode. Portrait mode = vertical and landscape = horizontal. Here is a picture of the two modes:
